Game Idea Would Like Help With It

by Ishbuu · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 03/05/2003 (3:42 pm) · 16 replies

I would like to start a game called Mechan Assault Force:First Battalion and would like to get some constructive criticism about my ideas. Offers for help would be greatly appriciated.

Since you're making a Halo clone, I would suggest defining what faults Halo has... and fixing them. :)

How many bloody battalions do we need around here?

First Battalion? Second Battalion...

Now about last + one battlion?

Battalion bigger than the other battalions....

sheesh.

Sorry.

I dunno battalions are the just the LARGE FORCES IN A BATTLE! Sorry, but it's true.

Actually, a battalion is a large force in a battle. I believe for infantry, the breakdown goes like this(could be mistaken):

Battalion
Company
Platoon
Squad

So your game idea, unless I'm totally off-base and misreading the idea, is happening at the squad level. The idea of a battalion could be worked in similar to "Halo": having small concentrations of troops in various locations which you can support.

The numerous typos made it very difficult to determine what all you were planning. I'm seeing something of an interesting back story, but it needs work.

Keep at it.

I'm re-doing the summery and hope it'll make it easier to understand. Alex, you're right and I put the summery together quickly and what you said is probably right, but the name says first battalion meaning you would be part of the first battalion making it so you would be playing at the squad level. Just trying to clear things up a little.

The game sounds possible....yeah you really should work on your summary some more too. But what i want to know is, wheres the originality? And how is it that there arent any humans involved?

Revise the idea. It sounds 'eh' right now, but you could definatly make it better. Keep at it, you can make it...

Interesting plot... definetely needs some more work and a spellcheck feature. hehe.

As for originality... are Quake3 and UnrealTournament very original? =)

Ishbuu, just keep refining the idea until it's to a more presentable state; then ask for help finishing the design.

That's a great point, Ian. I can't remember the last time I bought a game when I knew anything about the story beforehand. As long as it's not a COMPLETE ripoff and doesn't insult my intelligence, it's all good.

Well, the plot is being typed now. It's about four pages long and looks like one of those race history stories in the starcraft booklet.(It's a little big for a booklet, but...) we really only started the plot a little bit ago due to our priorities. There are humans in the story, but I forgot how. =)

Adib: didnt mean to sound so harsh.

I'd been reading back a few hundred posts that night and had read a lot of "this battalion" and "that battalion" kinda names (not neccassarily with battalion in them, but sounding in that kind of style).

To play counterpoint to Mr. McCrary, I would recommend discovering what made Halo successful first. For every essential game element that you think made it a good game, identify another game that used that element but failed. Instead of just changing what they do wrong, make sure you copy what they did right.

I would also recommend having serious answers for why every game that has ever made the top 10 list (retail) got there. That includes Deer Hunter and Myst. "Stupid rednecks like killing forest creatures" is not a serious answer. =)

There are two things that you can do. First you could improve on what other games have tried to do, or you can reinvent new things and do them right.

I'd like to try the latter.
