T3D Roadmap?

by Katelan Moye · in Torque 3D Professional · 06/06/2009 (9:31 pm) · 11 replies

Does GarageGames have a roadmap of T3D, and what their vision of T3D is for the next couple years?

If so, is it under NDA?

I just think it might be cool to look at =)

I don't think they have any specific features listed for way down the road. I'm sure their very early R&D stuff is under NDA. After they gave too much information out during TGEA's development they are now a bit more tight lipped about what's coming out and especially when things are coming out.

Which isn't to say they are stingy with information the devleopment blogs have been great, but I just don't expect to hear anything about post release goals until T3D is actually out.

One thing I did read, though, is that they are taking their "development queues" from major AAA engines like Crytek and Unreal, and now that they have the resources to realize some of the more ambitious features these engines have i'm sure we will start to see more things currently only found in AAA engine being brought into the Torque and the Indie space (or at least that's what i'm hoping for).

Our roadmap is actually very, very simple. Here's a copy:

Torque 3D:
* awesome editors
* awesome tech
* awesome docs

Next Torque 3D:
* world domination

Last time I checked, world domination was already 50% completed. If you want to be on the testing team for this feature, mail Ken.

Need at least 25% more world domination, get back to work!

You're right. Back to the trenches.

Tom had the amazing idea to integrate world domination right into the core engine. Press F9 and down it comes. He's currently working hard on getting the best possible lighting for this new baby.

haha to the snarky responses, but I'd be interested in this too. Is there really no internal roadmap?

I'm sure there's a roadmap, there's gotta be....

Whether it's NDA is the question =)

We're still on the first step of the roadmap

There most definitely is a road map but planning out software past maybe 18 months out, especially in this industry, is insanity. Those best laid plans get torpedoed by things like the Wii, iPhone, web technology, and everything else that keeps this such a fun industry to work in.

I can tell you that we're looking at more mobile platforms with serious interest. We've still got major, core engine changes ahead of us with componentization. I want our content pipeline to be absolutely bullet proof and dead simple to use. That's a core goal. At some point we need to take a hard look at Torquescript and whether we want to adopt a different language, or improve it further. I want us to stay on the bleeding of of the best, most democratic distribution platforms. The web is clearly becoming one of those and I think this will only get better and better. It's really an open landscape to tackle, one that's continuously evolving.

So...clear cut answer is yes, there is a road map. It's not really relevant beyond maybe 12 months as we pride ourselves on agility. In the next 12 months, the core focus will be improving tools, improving the content pipeline, supporting the best platforms, accessing Torquescript's place (or lack thereof) in the next cycle, moving toward further componentization. If you're under NDA with us, I can probably tell you more, but that's it for today :)
