Odd lighting on .DTS shapes

I'm getting funny lighting on my .dts shapes when they are not inside the bounding box of another .dts object.
Look here: www.rykos.net/oddlight.jpg
The top picture are of my Test guy and a quickly made dts shape inside the bounding box of the pyramid in the Scorched scenario.
The bottom are the pair just outside of the bounding box, and as you can see their lighting has changed significantly. The only other post I have found that is similar to this, is in regards to odd lighting on the character model, and they told him to flip the normals on his character in Max. Well.. I do that and really odd things happen(no matter which way I look at him in max, it looks like he's inside out)
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, I'm running Build 1.1.1 and no rendering stuff is modified yet.
