DTS only in 3D?

by Henry Shilling · in Torque X 3D · 05/16/2009 (10:22 am) · 10 replies

I can only use DTS models with TorqueX 3D builder? I tried to import a .x into the scene and nothing happened.

Strange, that was working in the Beta. I'll try it out too. the Builder is supposed to use the T3DXnaRenderComponent for .x and .fbx models.

I tried it again today thinking I did something wrong, it imports the skin pngs but no model. I will try an fbx however I have a tool that exports .x files and I didn't really want to go through the hassle of converting as they are pretty large. I may have to anyway to get them to look good.

Can you use the Houdini Apprentice DTS export?

I have not been able to add anything but DTS, no FBX either.

What is that Houdini? I looked at their site and still can't tell what it is? LOL! If it exports a DTX correctly I wouldnt see why it would not work. If I understand it correctly DTS is Garage Games only.

I purchased a copy of Apprentice HD in hopes of an improved content pipeline and a 'professional' content editor. I've also tried Blender and trueSpace (both are free, but $99 is near free IMHO).

FYI, I've still made no decision, but I've invested in a Blender book and downloaded all of http://www.gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html.

Houdini Apprentice HD is a PITA because it doesn't have FBX export. Being limited to DTS only can't be all good. Which gets back to your issue, to which I've not really attempted FBX inside TX3D; sorry :-/

I tried the fbx and nothing happened for me either. I was able to get it working by adding it directly to the vs project, then I could add it to the scene in tx builder 3d.

You can get Softimage Mod tool, free, if you are a student or parent of a student you can get a student license of almost anything, 3ds is pretty affordable that way.

There is a pretty cool chart on the Torque Developers Network: http://tdn.garagegames.com/wiki/DTS/FeatureChart

Might help you out.

FYI, the TX TDN page http://tdn.garagegames.com/wiki/TorqueX/CommonModelProblems

Says:
3. Can I use XNA models?
Only for static geometry, so don't plan on bringing over your .FBX character models. This will probably change in a future release.

*I* don't happen to mean anything. :-) That's just what the link says.

I believe that it means .X and .FBX, as these formats have content pipelines shipped with XNA, thereby making the 'XNA Model Formats'. I guess.

John implies that .X and .FBX should be handled by TX3D.
If not now, soon.
