3AM - 3D Artist's Magazine

Hello All,

I am in the process of publishing an eMagazine that is totally dedicated to helping the artist that works with real-time 3D environments. The magazine's name is 3AM - 3D Artist's Magazine.

3AM will be published bi-monthly and features articles that cover such things as level design issues, texture design tips, tricks to keep your FPS high, product reviews (mainly freeware, shareware and inexpensive products) of software that will help you along the way, and a lot more.

I have personally been creating real time 3D art for a number of years now, mainly with applications like Genesis3D, Jet3D and now with 3D GameStudio. Among these communities (and others such as Blitz3D and DarkBASIC) I have found you can get a lot of answers if you are looking for help with programming, but when it comes to help with making your game look good, then the help is much more sparce. As a result, 3AM was conceived to help fill the gap.

In other communities I have had a surprisingly good response to the idea of 3AM. As a result, I have decided to post about it here. If you find the idea of 3AM interesting, then please visit the following URL:

http://www.web2d3.com/3am

The first issue of 3AM is due out on February 15th. Each issue is not free (sorry), but only costs $5.00. The reason for this is that I have to offset costs of hosting, applications used to create the eMagazine and time (we have three writers on staff, all of which are professional graphic artists working with RT3D).

Anyone can download the issue freely and there will be an article or two that will be available to read. The rest of the magazine will be locked and, with each paid subscription, a username and password will be Emailed to you.

If you just want to talk about RT3D art related topics, then you can stop by the 3AM Forum. Just go to the 3AM web site (link above) and click on the FORUM link at the top of the page.

Thanks for your time!

Sounds like a good idea, I think you'll have a hard time getting over the "But the web should be free" attitude (i'm not saying that's right or wrong).

But good luck none the less.

I must say that I had knew Dan Silverman in the past (When I didn't knew about Torque :) )and that he is really good. He his the kind of guy who is able to say "hmmm, I don't know ! Wait, I'll check" when he don't know the answer ... then, he try and find the right answer ... I like that attitude compared to a lot of guys that say "I know everything, do this" ...giving a false answer, making you lose your time trying what they say :)

So, I'm sure the 5$ will worth it and will surely be better then a lot of really more expensive books outhere.

... my 2 Canadian cents .... it's like 1 US cents but ... hehe

Good luck with you project Dan. I'll go see it for sure

Hi Neil,

Nope. No relation to 3D Artist Magazine. That is one reason mine is called 3AM for the title. I called it 3AM because I have often found myself up to 3AM working on an RT3D project. It turns out this is common among many designers and programmers :) . The difference between 3AM and 3D Artist Magazine is that 3AM focuses soley on RT3D art related subjects (level design, texture creation for RT3D, etc.). 3D Artist focuses on 3D in general (things like ray tracing, modeling that may not be low-poly, etc.).

Gilles,

Wow. Nice comments. Thank you very much! Where do you know me from? Was it the 3D GameStudio forum or some other place? In any case, thank you for your interest in 3AM. I hope that it will give many people the information they need.

I think it is a good idea, but having been 'bitten' by Serious 3D, I know that I would not subscribe to this. I wish you luck.

Hi Joe,

What is "Serious 3D" and what did they do to you?

Also, just to let you know, I am not going to ask for a "yearly" subsciption at all. You pay for each issue. So, what you do is download an issue and then you can pay for it to unlock it. There will be some articles in each issue that will be unlocked so even if you do not pay for the issue there will be something to read and learn from. If the other article titles interest you and if the free ones struck your fancy, then you can subscribe to unlock the rest of the articles.

In any case, I am sorry that someone else burned you so bad. I wish people would think about their actions. Now the actions of these people could be affecting me (in that you know you won't subscribe to 3AM).

Like someone said before, I'm going to need a lot of motivation to pay to look at a website. :)

Dan,

Yes it was from GameStudio when I was trying all the engine outthere to find the right one for me. But I doubt you'd know me as I'm discreet on forums, as much as I can :) The more I can learn by myself and the more my brain is happy :) But even if I'm discreet, my eyes aren't and I can see who know what he is talking about, and who's not. Hey, after all, in the near future, I will drop that hit game on the market and I will have to go search all the most passionate guys on the planet to make all the next hits :) You'd be one of those I have "spotted" that I'd try hard to convince that day. hehe

BTW, nice site, like always. keep it going

Anthony,

The web site is free. The magazine is a downloadable, standalone file. As I said before, you can download the magazine and read the free articles within. If you find them helpful, then perhaps you would like to pay to unlock the remainder of the magazine. If not, then I can completely understand.

Gilles,

Thanks again for your very kind comments!

Serious 3d was a paper magazine that was produced by Bill Flemming a few years ago. I subscribed, and after a few issues, the paper magazine could no longer afford to be published, so, the mag went online. The quality dropped, the updates became less freequent, and the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. Your idea sounds much better, where it is not a yearly susbscription and not a site where you cannot see what you are getting.

This is nothing against you guys or the idea, as I think it is great, I was just expressing a sentiment that I had about subscription sites based on an extremely bad experience I had with Serious 3d.

I too will vouch for Dan Silverman. He is a knowledgeable and helpful man who has gone out of his way to help others with their issues on many occasions. I know dan from the 3D Game Studio forums where he's very highly respected. I'm not an artist Dan but if I was I'd subscribe :)
