So what was the announcment at the GDC???
by Brandon · in Torque X 3D · 03/31/2009 (7:48 am) · 21 replies
Seems like it was just Torque 3D... nothing to do with TorqueX
Though they don't update their page often.. they finally did and there is no mention of any new update with TX3D
So what was the hoopla about TX at GDC??

Could be held up as well to maybe add in support for XNA 3.1 (just speculation on my part)

Do you guys feel comfortable buying this engine? I know it's a pretty good deal as far as cost/theoretical benefit goes, but if the support isn't there, it's kind of moot.

So the lack of updates about TX3D makes wonder how high on the priority list this product is. I kind of get the feeling it's the redheaded stepchild of the engine offerings here. Seems like GG is spreading itself kind of thin between all of the products they are offering. THat's just my from-the-outside-in observation.Do you guys feel comfortable buying this engine? Or maybe they just gave a demo of Torque 3D and said they'll also have a TX3d "soon" type of deal

Yeah i sort of agree. I think the announcement must have been about Torque 3D which looks like an awesome product with a big price tag on it. Obviously they gota stick with what will keep them alive as a business.Or maybe they just gave a demo of Torque 3D and said they'll also have a TX3d "soon" type of deal

Yes, XNA 3.1 support is definitely a possible reason for the hold-up, since if they want it to work for the DBP competition (and I'm assuming they and MS both do) it will have to be XNA 3.1 compatible. Would be nice if we could get an official word on that as yes, I'd heard that TorqueX was not a high priority project for GG (from a post some time ago on the XNA forums, so take that for what it's worth).

Well, last I heard 3.0 was in certification from Microsoft. XNA 3.1 isn't going to be released until May at the earliest. Honestly, I'd rather go ahead and get my hands on 3.0 and convert to 3.1 later. But yes, an official word would be nice. Hopefully we'll hear something again soon.

Yeah I have given up on TorqueX3D, so sick of waiting. I moved on to Unity3D 2.5. But I do miss this community which is why I still lurk in the shadows.

See this post (http://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/16825) on Deborah Marshall blog for a video of the live demo.

I was able to compile TX 2.0 for XNA 3.0. If you have the source, you can make XNA 3.0 games. There's just no 3D editor so if you want 3D you have to make your own.Brian

Has anyone been able to even run a 3D sample on XNA 3.0 yet?
04/07/2009 (10:32 am)
I haven't been able to get 3D to run in TX2D. I don't think it's compatible with 3.0, which is what XNA requires.Has anyone been able to even run a 3D sample on XNA 3.0 yet?

Are you able to get 2D games to working? I was able to get my 2D game working in XNA 3.0. I had to compile the source in XNA 3 then change my references for the Garagames.TorqueX.dll (I think that's the name. Can't really check because I'm at work) to the location I compiled the engine to.Brian

Basically I am hot for the 3D Builder.

I have been using TorqueX fine, recompiled with XNA 3.0 Visual Studio 2008. 2D and 3D have both worked for me.Basically I am hot for the 3D Builder.

The 3D builder would be nice... Oh well... Torque 3D has distracted me in the mean time... the videos... so pretty... but I still hate working with C++. Curses, will probably still buy it... it'd be just my luck both Torque 3D and Torque X 3D came out at the same time... I'd be broke for weeks...

You just have to create your own builder if you use one of those engines..
04/09/2009 (5:51 am)
honestly the main draw to this engine is the builder. W/out the builder you are just paying for an engine when there are several good ones that are free for xna. You just have to create your own builder if you use one of those engines..

However, I am really disturbed by the fact that TorqueX 3D is available for pre-order with no official (or even speculative) release date. Also, there is no benefit to pre-order. Why would I want to pay to pre-order something and have nothing to show for it ( no beta, no price break vs release, no aticipated release date).
Some official word would be extremely nice. I will continue to wait but, I am researching alternatives while I wait.

I too have been patiently waiting. I am getting a little tired of waiting. I think this is the 3rd time someone has said its about to be released due to some inside info..
GG's big announcement was a nullpointerexception

Well, the good news is, since all of this has to go through certification, we'll probably get a better release of Torque X 3D than Torque 3D.Brian

I personally was hoping to use TXB3D for the Dream-Build-Play competition, but we'll see. I have no idea if it will be released in time.
