The mountPoint is located near the center of the handle. I am using a joint for the mountPoint and the muzzlePoint. I notice that there is no actual joints when i do them. Just a blue line that goes from mountPoint to muzzlePoint

It's a good habit to get into, I highly advise starting it with MilkShape if you haven't (I've had to reanimate soooooo many models because I screwed up the orientations somehow).

Also, before you animate your weapon, it's good to hit Tools->Zero Joints. This resets joint orientation. This is a good thing because if in the future you decide to add another joint, it will screw up the rest of your joint orientations and screw up your animations. With zero joints, you can be sure they are all the same orientation so that if you add a node, you can hit zero joints again and all will be fine. It's a good habit to get into, I highly advise starting it with MilkShape if you haven't (I've had to reanimate soooooo many models because I screwed up the orientations somehow).
