Rotating dif files

Ok, when you insert a prefabricated dif model, how the heck do you rotate it in game?
When I select the object and press F3, there 4 numbers in the Rotate field, default
being 1 0 0 0. If I change any of these numbers and press apply, the editor simply resets the rotation value back to 1 0 0 0.
So how am I supposed to rotate objects? Is there no way to rotate the objects freehand?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ost in, but there isn't a mapping forum.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The 4 numbers represent a vector on which to rotate, and then an amount by which to rotate along that vector. If that helps at all :-P
