Cant get TGB ro run.

by Brian Anderson · in Torque Game Builder · 03/07/2009 (10:52 pm) · 17 replies

The instalation seemed to work fine. But when I go to run TGB it wont start. When I go to the task manager it is not in the applications list. It is in the Processes list.

System stats
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
4Gb Ram
2G dual core
I have MS Visual 2008 pro
SDK v6.0a

I can get Torsion to open just cant get TGB to run. Anyone else having this same problem or more importantly know how to fix this?

Brian,
For clarification - are you referring to running TGB from the shortcut on your desktop/startmenu or are you trying to start a debug version that you built in visual studio? Also, you might check to ensure that it was installed while you have full administrative rights and that the install did work properly by looking to make sure there is a start menu entry for TGB and you can try uninstall/reinstall from the control panel as well.

I struggled gettin TGB to run on Vista as well. The following solved my problems, though:

On the shortcut for starting TGB, right-click and select properties, then select the compatability tab.

Make sure that "Run this program in compatibility mode for XP SP2" is selected, and "Disable desktop composition" is selected.

Yes I am refering to running it from the desktop shortcut or start menu and not a debug version i built in studio. I do have full admin rights and even ran it as admin. There is a start menu entry for TGB and I have tried to uninstall and reinstsall it about 4 times now.

I had already set it to run in XP SP2 mode and just tried the desktop composistion and it did come up saying that it was changing my settings. But I still do not get the game builder. When I go into my task manager and cancel it in the processed it now changes the windows seeting back. So it looks to be running somewhere in the back ground but I cant see it or use it.

I have similar symptoms on a desktop:
> Windows XP SP2
> Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM
> ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 with 256M RAM
> Avast Antivirus and Sunbelt Personal Firewall
> TorqueGameBuilder_174.exe (2/20/2009 5:31PM)
> Torsion_1_1_3.exe (2/20/2009( 5:29 PM)

The install for both GGs went fine. When I tried to run TGB, it was very slow to start, and I may have clicked a second time thinking it hadn't started. When it started, the screen was distorted and I could only kill it with Task Manager, and then I rebooted.

Then I tried to run TGB from a fresh boot. It was slow but eventually came up and looked normal. I entered the same registration code that had worked on a notebook. The desktop responded with a "Server Error" message. It was unresponsive and I eventually killed it with Task Manager.

After I killed it, I noticed it didn't show as a Task Manager Application, but was consuming 99% of CPU as a Process. I finally killed it with several [End Process] cycles. I tried several more times, but it wouldn't properly start, and continued with the CPU at 99%.

Is there a log file or some other way to determine what is failing?

Thanks,
Dave

I finaly got it to work but I had to do a clean install on my computer to get that and am now in the proccess of installing 1 program at a time back into my computer and hoping it will still work after each.

Very odd. You might consider turning off the RSS feeds, they can sometimes cause problems.

I have since uninstalled Torsion and TGB, rebooted, then reinstalled only TGB. When I run TGB it continues to consume 99% of CPU as a Process, but never appears as an Application. Killing the process doesn't always stop the TGB process ... kill power to the PC.

Possibly there is some debris from another program (e.g. GG tool or game) that is fouling TGB. Is there some uninstall or registry fixes I should check?

How do I disable RSS feeds, for TGB, or other tool?

I found the problem with mine. I have a program for my VisTablet called MacroKey manager (or something to that effect) and when I reinstalled it TGB stoped working agian. So there is something in conflict between the 2 of these programs. I can use the tablet without the Macro keys so for now I'll just leave it off of my system.

@David: After you uninstall try going here:

<User>/AppData/Roaming/GarageGames/

and look for TorqueGameBuilder or Torque Game Builder and clear out those values, then reinstall. See if that helps.

@Brian: Very weird.

My machine is an IBM workstation, with Visual Studio, MATLAB, and similar software development tools. It also has run many generations of games, and hasn't exhibited the described behavior. As far as I know, it doesn't have MacroKey manager or similar tools installed.

Edit -> I didn't see the earlier response. I will try it, thanks.

@David: What's in your "console.log" file?

Status:
- Uninstalled TGB
- Deleted C:\...\Application Data\GarageGames
I didn't find any folder named Roaming
- Rebooted
- Installed TGB
- Ran TGB as part of the install process
TORQUE~1.EXE consumed 99% as a process
TorqueGameBuilder_174.exe was still running at 0%
- Rebooted machine to SafeMode w/o network
- TGB works, I disabled RSS, created single sprite project
Crashes trying to save, creates and saves a 2nd project OK
- Reboot machine to non-SafeMode
- Run TGB from desktop icon, it consumes 99% as a process, nonresponsive
- Reboot several times, OK in SafeMode, 99% in non-SafeMode
- One non-SafeMode test had the network cable unhooked
- Console.log from running non-SafeMode
I had clicked on OK project file that had been created in SafeMode

David,

Something is going seriously wrong with your OpenGL stuff there. Not being able to use stock OpenGL functions like "glGenTextures", "glBindTexture" and "glTexImage2D" is bad.

I would suggest switching to DirectX mode as your current configuration has bad/no OpenGL support.

However, if it works in Safe mode where you get a safe video driver but doesn't in normal operation it would suggest that your video driver has bad/no OpenGL support.

In SafeMode TGB shows D3D in the project settings.

When I run in non-SafeMode, TGB is stuck as a Process, consuming 99% of CPU. I tried disabling all the OpenGL options in preferences.cs in AppData, but it continues to get stuck as a Process.

How do I convert to D3D mode?

On another machine, I see the same "can't load OpenGL" at the start of console.log, but it later shows OpenGL runs. On that other machine, the text lines that follow the halt point (see console.log above) show network operations.

Is it possible networking is the problem?

I ran SafeMode again, with and without Networking. TGB works without networking in SafeMode, but gets stuck as a 99% Process in SafeMode if Networking is enabled. I replaced the Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit adapter with a D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet. TGB ran once with the D-Link card in non-SafeMode, but became stuck as a 99% Process later.

Are there known issues with TGB startup and networks?

I reloaded XP, SP3, Windows updates, IBM drivers, etc and it appears to be working.

oh guys please tell me that there is some another way to solve this problem that reinstalling computer! (ok don't just tell me that there is the a way but actually tell me that way :) ) It would be really pain in the ass to spend whole day on it, geez... thx for help
btw same problem, runs in safe mode (WXP Home SP3, dell 1501 - graphic card radeon X1150, never had problem with either DirectX or OpenGl)
does not run in normal mode, consumes 49% CPU(dual core) CANNOT BE KILLED from task manager, need to be restarted.
I just wanted to try demo version but hell i don't want to go through complications such as complete reinstall just becase that.
Help Appreciated!!
