Program crash on animated Monster Intro

by Jim Rowley · in General Game Discussion · 12/20/2002 (9:43 pm) · 8 replies

The game is crashing on my PC during the animated introduction with an Invalid Page Fault. Works ok if I press a mouse key to skip the intro. message was: CHAIN REACTION caused an invalid page fault in
module D3DIM700.DLL at 015f:56675749
MarbleBlast and Orbz are working well for me...
I'm on a Pentium 3-750, NVidia Gforce2 GTS Pro, and using D3D 8.1 I believe.

Dang! There's that GeForce 2 bug again! It looks like I need to get ahold of a GeForce 2 card to really track this error down.

Make sure you have the most recent device drivers. It sometimes helps. I'll see if I can get a card and track down the bug.

Have you been able to play it? If this problem persists and it is just related to the opening intro loop, you can turn it off in the Chain Reaction.ini file. It's pretty well documented so you shouldn't have a problem turning it off.

Chris, I suppose I could just phone you, but I have a spare Geforce 2. It's left over since we won a Geforce 4 at the Indie Con for our upcoming title ThinkTanks. :) Shameless plug.

thanks Chris.
I'll disable it in the .ini as the game seems to work well if i click through the animated intro.
any way to change resolution of the game in the .ini file? I've played with the settings, but they only seem
to alter the game window sizes...

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone ;)

Truth be told, I was very lazy about supporting different window sizes. There are entries in the ini file which suggest that I supported this but they do nothing. They are completely ignored. There is no way to alter the resolution of the game at this time, though you are not the first to suggest this.

It was our belief that the majority audience would not care about this feature. I tried to reduce the design down to the absolute mimimum UI for this audience. Perhaps that was a mistake but often games are too customizable for the base-line audience.

I couldn't get it to run at all and after a day of digging, found that I needed a newer Graphics Card.
I purchased a new graphics card, a PNY Verto GeForce MX 420, with 64MB SDRAM. Nvidia chipset.

Installed card, DirectX8.1 and display drivers.

Chain Reaction now opens a smaller size window, music starts, after a bit the blank window shows a stage curtain, and your Monster studios flashing lights, then the guy rockets across the screen with the type. As soon as he gets all the way on...

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

Admittedly I'm on a older system: Tyan Titan Pro Pentium Pro 200, but it runs most anything I throw at it, like Mechwarrior 3, 2, 1 (anyone remember that! ;-) Tribes, Earthsiege.... I upgraded the graphics card just for these Garage Games because my Matrox Mystique 220 didn't have hardware 3D support.

Do I need DX9 to run these games?

Bruce,

Your computer is pretty slow, but it might run CR. It sounds like you may have to run it in fullscreen. For some reason some computers can only play CR in fullscreen. I'm looking into why.

In the ReadMe document there is a step-by-step section on running CR in fullscreen. You can get to the readme by going to start->programs->Chain Reactions->Readme

Tell me how this works for you.

OK, That works.

Oddly, if I just sit there and wait for the intro animation to continue, it still crashes. But if I skip the intro, before it's done, It let me enter my activation code and register the game. It then lets me play. I can also set it for full screen mode so it's not playing in a little window but the resolutin looks like it still 800x600 0r maybe less.

Is there any way to run it at higher resolutions?

I noticed that the .ini file has a resolution setting so I set it to 1024x768, restarted the game... but it still looks like it is at 640x480 (which it was set to originally in the .ini file). What should I expect or try with that?

I do get a bit of sparkleing on the ground textures when I rotate the view. Also, MC is always black, and anthing near him turns dark like he is a shadow or inverted light.

Oops! It just crashed. after Josh started using it a few seconds. hummm.... I'll check the display options too. Progress I think, at least.

Seems to crash when ever we try to build our own puzzles.

Thanks so much,

Bruce

I purchased and installed a second copy of Chain Reaction on a friend's computer for a Christmas gift and I witnessed the same intro screen crash as witnessed on my home computer. I'm not sure what sort of video card he had however.
