Terrain scale

Hey All,
I'm new to Torque but not new to game development... I have a question regarding terrain and scale. I've decided not to use Atlas because I prefer the in-game editing that mega-terrain provides. Now, I'm making a flight sim and obviously am going to need lots of real-estate for my planes to cover... here's my question: Instead of making the terrain larger, couldn't I just make my planes smaller? My only concern with this approach is that default settings for things like explosions and particle effects will all have to be scaled down to match. Is this a logical way of dealing with the terrain/scale issue for a FS?...
