2D TGB mini game plugin to play in browser from flash based html or standard html
by Path · in Torque Game Builder · 01/18/2009 (12:45 pm) · 15 replies
Looking to create playable mini games in web browsers from flash based or standard html pages.
Is there something new since the last series of posts I found dated '04-'06 for this in TGB?
Does any have experience with igloader.com?
Instant Action isn't an option at this time.

After scouring the net I came across OSAkit.com which was designed by the same person who is the author of the last major post on Torque Games on web browsers (2006). It looks solid.

Go to My Website and press "Play My Games(beta)" on the top menu. It's an integration of the original TGE plugin with TGB. Should be a simple and cheap start for you.

Unfortunately, I've installed all the things that come with your plugin and I can't get it to work. I'm using Firefox as a browser on a PC laptop.

:P Not sure why it isn't working on your system, anyway just trying to point you out to a good start with the resources in the community.

1) FIREFOX - "No suitable plugins were found"
I then installed the Mayan browser .exe file, went back to your site to open the Beta Game and got this:
"firefox.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application my fix this problem."
I did reinstall and got the same error message. It might have to do with not having MS Server Pack 3 installed.
2) IE - "Internet Explorer - Security Warning"
"Windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher.
Name: mayanplugin.cab
Publisher: Unknown Publisher"
You might need to go and purchase one of the "GeoLock" or whatever they're called certificates. Again my security settings might be set too high (I wouldn't really know, I only use FireFox), but I have tested the demo downloads for OSAkit from the user end and it downloads fine for both IE and Firefox.
Hope this helps clear up any issues you might be having with your plugin

Here are the two responses I got for each browser I attempted:1) FIREFOX - "No suitable plugins were found"

But I still can't get it to work from a browser (IE or FireFox) directly on your site.
It probably has to do with Windows blocking the download of the CAB file.
Regardless, I do appreciate the introduction to some of the software features.

Yeah, that was one of the problem. You'll have to get the user to install the ActiveX and accept the certificates via the browser. To be honest, at this point I don't see a valid reason to use TGB over flash if you are aiming a 2D browser game. Most of the users already have Flash's ActiveX installed on their system and there's already plenty of flash game browser portal you can put your game and make some money.

As mainly a graphic designer, I really like the user friendliness of TGB and the whole community forum despite its occasion posts that lead to nowhere and getting locked out of certain forums.
So, that's one reason along with the fact that the interface for Flash CS4(or any version) drives me nuts. I only use Adobe Flash when there's scripting involved. The actual 2D animation I do in a different program.
I'm also hoping that after similar posts like this, and some of my direct emails to GG, they'll add a simple to use port to browser feature like some of the other Game Engines out there.
Until then, I'm currently trying to get OSAKitPro to work, which definitely has some flaws of it's own from an implementation standpoint, but I'm starting to get it to work in the IE browser. So, it'll do for now.
But yeah, I totally see your argument about rendering unto Adobe Flash what is Adobe Flash's.

Actually, my aim is to start out with 2D and once I've got a command of the Torque script and simple game making, upgrade to 3D which I also plan to port to browsers. As mainly a graphic designer, I really like the user friendliness of TGB and the whole community forum despite its occasion posts that lead to nowhere and getting locked out of certain forums.

What do you know about IgLoader? It says it operates without the need for ActiveX.
I'm confused on the pricing though, it runs $600, but their site says:
"**igLoader may be used freely for commercial and non-commercial purposes provided you or your company owns the software you plan to distribute with this plugin. You may not distribute third party software under the terms of the free license**"
Are they saying no pirates allowed? Or that you can only post your game on the web but not allow players to download it?

I believe igLoader uses ActiveX to install under IE since that is the way that you install things in IE. But as a Mozilla plug-in for FF. But then again, I'm not sure. That's what I would expect. I've heard some pretty good things from people who have used it; though I haven't used it myself.

I think that is primarily for portals that charge for a game and then use the free license to host it in the browser.I believe igLoader uses ActiveX to install under IE since that is the way that you install things in IE. We'll be supporting web publishing in the next version of Torque 2D (TGB), but it's probably a late-2009 thing. Are you getting good results with this OSAKit plugin? I've never seen it. Any live examples?

I suggest you take a look at Roozz plugin from www.3djam.com
This plugin will alow you to run TGB games in all browsers (IE, FireFox, Opera, Crome, Safari, etc.)
You don't even have to recompile your game to test it.
Check out the tutorial videos on Roozz website to get a quick into to how it works.
