Other Game Engines Vs. Torque

by Jaren Watkins · in Torque Game Engine · 01/15/2009 (12:00 pm) · 8 replies

I've owned Torque for about 2 years now and have used it for about six months. I havent been avidly try to learn how to use it though so if I wanted I could know how to use it more efficent but I dont lol.

I realy do like it and stuff but I was just looking around at other Game engines and wondered if they are comparable with Torque?

Such as the C4 Engine how does this one do compared to Torque the screen's from there site look impresive! The built in World Editor Looks realy GOOD!!

Also how about Ogre 3D Some of the stuff created by deck 13 is realy cool! I dont know much about Ogre but it looks capable of building things!

Ogre is not a game engine - it's a rendering engine you can use to create a game engine. Looks good, though. As for others, there is the big competitor "Unity 3D". The price is much higher, but people give it good reviews - I have no direct experience so I can't say. Then there is GameCore - used to be called "Beyond virtual", but they're still in beta, and have been forever. C4 does look good too.

Have you given TGEA a chance? 1.7.1 is heads above TGE. 1.8 has some reported performance issues, but is much cleaner. The next rev is looking really cool in the screen shots, but no one really knows at this time how much it will cost, or what the feature set is.

Yea I was concidering upgrading to TGEA but thought I should check out some other Game engines to see if there worthy! But I will probally be sticking with TGE and upgrading to TGEA!

I'm going to wait for Torque 3D and see what that brings also!

It's definitely a smart idea to check out all of your options. Our site admin, David, owns a few different engines/tech. He definitely supports the idea of using the tech that fits for you.

If you already have experience with TGE, you at least have a good amount of starting information.

@Jaimi - Off note, I didn't know Beyond Virtual was renamed to GameCore. I like that title a little bit better.

@Michael -

Yeah, GameCore sounds better. The screenshots don't look so good, but who knows what it would be like in the hands of a skilled artist - probably much like any other engine.

On another note, I'd like to say that TGEA is really looking good. Matt and crew have been doing a great job, it is so much better than the earlier versions, and better than TGE by leaps and bounds. I was a bit shocked when they started talking about the possible price increase on it for the next rev,but that's just because I want it so much. Not only that, I want everyone to be able to get it. :)

GameCore's an interesting engine, though the performance has been pretty low in the betas (which is what beta's are for, after all). BV worked rather well as long as you were conscious of creating optimized artwork and simple collision meshes. The default demo levels had a low framerate because of that initially. The new physics systems are pretty neat as were the gray shooter demos before the name change.

I have checked out numerous engines and each have their good points and bad points, including Torque. If I was going to invest in yet another engine, it would be Unity 2.5 when it comes out. Having said that, Odds are I will stick with Torque and upgrade to T3D. I feel the tech will be comparable to others if not higher, and.. most importantly to me.. I feel comfortable in this community and have a great deal of trust and respect for the GG people (except for one who may very well be satin incarnate!;) )

I have looked at a few engines myself and have bought two a license for two (tge/tgea and c4). Each engine that i looked at, all possess the same similar features and bits in one way or another. There is no valid ground to say one game engine is better than another; they all do the same job.

Every engine have their own sets of problems and solutions which evidently annoy someone at some point. Just get to know the particular characteristics of one and stick with it. Every engine is made to suit a particular type of person not game. Just find one that suits you and stay with it.

(A confession coming up), Honestly in the beginning I didn't like torque. I have to apologise to the community for any time I put it down but I suppose everyone encounters something similar when dealing with learning a new software package (new to me when I purchased it).

After a while (or just recently) I realised not every engine is the dream engine, experience after playing with several. It will always remain as a constant toss up between complexity and simplicity and time. I am sure every developer knows that frustration and annoyance are around the corner but it is what we love to do.

If you like torque stick with it, if you don't try something else. (Not being smart just summarising).

maybe you can try www.neoaxisgroup.com/ neoxisengine, that use OGRE for render... but is in development.

for the moment i still with torque, learn and dominate a software take time... ;D
