Well, Long Story Short... (well kinda on the long side....)
I Thought of this amazing game idea of a modern city Rts (like in the 2000s) and the main story is...
WWIII. Of Course, It Might Happen-It Might Not (Hopefully Not) and i dont want to scare the little children.
But anyway, i wanted this to be a collab of the best rts games ever, World in conflict-Seriously check it out! and age of empires. ( III especially. Love the 3d gameplay. ) I Love age of empires and how you fight and everything, but the time setting... ehhhhhh, gets kinda boring after a while. and also, it takes forever to make your base, etc. So i thought about world in conflict. what i like about world in conflict is the modern style and how you parachute units into the battlefeild. So i thought combining these two games together would make the ultimate downtown fight aganst whomever you choose ( Heck, its WWIII.) so i took the best turn i would in game developing, and headed over to GG. I Found everything i need! (Just Dont Have the money..)
So once i rack up a couple hundred (I'd Say about 400$ For everything) I SAY I WANNA MAKE THE BEST RTS GAME I EVER MADE! (actually this will be my first one)
So right now im working on models using the torque constructor.
If you have any ideas to share, Id love to make them come to life.
Once i get the torque engine, My car i like to call my brain,
Is gonna be Speeding down the highway. (which a highway will be one of my levels in the game :D)
Note: Not exactly like those two games, cause i dont wanna get sued for coping professional games :\

It's a good idea but it will take a long time to develop. Good luck.

You definately want to start small, don't tackle the whole RTS at once. Once you have a model, work on having it move around a landscape. Maybe make a mini-game of looking for a flag. You want to take what you have and make the smallest possible game with it. That will give you the experience to make a bigger game, maybe looking for a flag while avoiding enemies that shoot at your character. You'll want to work on games that will take, at most, 30 days, at a time to develop to keep your momentum. It's a good idea but it will take a long time to develop. Good luck.

Another direction while you save that $400 ( me too ) might be a Java program, free engine, pdf book (post me for details) which will hone 3d, graphics, scripting etc - the principles are the same.

hi matt well this is my first post so i'm not sure whether it will come out as expected. I too am chomping at the bit to get started on a project and yours sounds great. I can do C++ no prob, but you say you don't have the Torque Engine...try 3D GAME PROGRAMMING ALL IN ONE - K.Finney ISBN 1-59200-136-X costs about $80 and comes with a trial version of Torque + all other necessary programs, Paintshop 30-day for graphics, sound programs, animation, QUARK for structures, etc. Post me if I can help you.Another direction while you save that $400 ( me too ) might be a Java program, free engine, pdf book (post me for details) which will hone 3d, graphics, scripting etc - the principles are the same.

I am a beginner at torque and trust me an RTS is in my heart but my heart and eyes are way to big for my skills.
as for programs that are free: Blender, GIMP, Context(for coding).

Being a college student I know what its like to develop on a budget and also want to tackle giant projects but I don't think you realize what its like to code an RTS. You should start with the basics like a top down shooter, than a gauntlet type game, car racing game, and than start to move into a creative project on your own but being a novice modeler and a beginner programming won't get your RTS made. YOU NEED A CODER, if possible youself, if you have no coder you have do not have any sort of code base, no code under your game means no game mechanics, and if you do not have that, having any sort of multimedia content at hand (textures, meshes, whatever) is useless.
Hell, a good coder could make you a game where every art assets are simply colored cubes and it could still be fun. Arts are a good thing to have, but they are merely the hull of the car.
and like Mikey said, ideas are cheap.
