TGEA SpeedTreeRT integration ~ PAID
by StudioVF · in Jobs · 11/17/2008 (4:05 am) · 18 replies
Greetings.
I need a coder, who is capable to integrate IDV SpeedTree RT into Torque Game Engine Advanced.
I know that someone from GG already did that, so if some of you guys have integrated it already and don't want/can't (I don't mind, you spent the time) to share the resource I would pay you if you could give it to me. Just in case...
It would be also nice to have the SpeedTree options integrated in our game preference GUI to be able to tweak the quality of trees etc.
Please don't reply if you want thousands of $$$ for that kind of work :-), 'cause we're just a small indie team.
P.S. Sorry for my pour english. My e-mail address is nightwish.06@hotmail.com
Best regards

Nop, they have only one version - Commercial. I know it does cost pretty much, but it's 100% needed for my project...

If your able to buy SpeedTree. You should be able to to pay a about one thousand to integrate it into TGEA.

Depends on how experienced the coder is and what features will be offered to us.

I wonder if you understand the request you are asking, and if you think that anyone who actually knows what SPEEDTREE RT is, and you think we are fools? I have looked into SpeedTree, if you can afford Speedtree for your torque game, be expected to pay for a professional to do it.

Thanks

Edward, I don't think that anyone here, at GG is a fool. If I did so, I would not post such offer. I know that this integration takes time and I know that it's going to cost me a pretty good sum of money. I'm not telling the budget, because I want ot hear offers from the experts (programmers), who might want to work with my offer. May be my english is not good enough for you to understand... but I hope you get the main idea out of this post. Thanks

I think its a very interesting thing that a project pops up and talks about integrating SpeedTReeRT, and perhaps SpeedPlantRT as well (if they still tag that along for free). Especially since TGEA is maturing rapidly, and the old tree 'libs/packs' all have been kinda canned.
I am not at a level myself where I can do this (I guess), nor do I currently have the time, but instead of polluting the thread with negative vibes we should all embrace those that are willing to make this a paied job, so that someone can get the experience working with a mature library.
Good luck Vasily

We currently use Speedtree RT at the studio that I work for. I can tell you now that intergration will be very difficult and time consuming to get it to work and look right in TGEA. The way that it renders and the way TGEA render are quite different. I have had some lengthy discussions with the lead programmer on this matter. Its not an easy task. Just my two cents worth... DL out.

Now I am told the lib and Speed SDK are very different then torque, just like DL stated. Which can mean many hours of work. If you get a good offer then sure, but make no mistake that and code that you do use, you wont be able to give it out as a free resource, as speedtree has a NDA for those kind of items. Its pretty much on a per game basis. And to my knowledge(anyone please correct me) i havent seen anyone in the forums post about a successful integration. (this could be due to the price tag). I can offer the TGE Forest Pack. Which might be something you may find a bit more easier and already Torque ready.

Maybe this will save you a few grand, you can bill me for my suggestion.

I have explored using this for Fantasci, and have also spoken to several programmers on the matter that have used this product, Its not a negative vibe to tell someone that the to in one hand say your going to use a 10k product (for a full license then expect someone to come along and just integrate the code at bargain basement price. SpeedTree is a very good program, if it wasnt it would have the pedagree or the price tag it does. Now I am told the lib and Speed SDK are very different then torque, just like DL stated. I took a look at the forest pack some time before, and it doesn't quite match the needs...
The main reason why we want to use SpeedTree is because of a nice pack of vegetation models, SpeedTreeCAD that goes with it and a nice tree rendering solution.
I've heard that there was a team that did integrate SpeedTreeRT in TGEA already, but they abandoned (?) their project some time ago (as far as I know), this was the reason why I wrote that I would rather pay if anyone did integrate it already. But if IDV has NDA, like Edward told us, we are on our own.
Many thanks for your replies, guys.
Still able to look at your offers.

there are at least 10 professional quality tree packs here for under 30 ucks. If you need a custom solution for your trees. im just curious what part of the speedtree rounded out your choice to use it.

Umm if your getting speedtree becuase of the vegetation packs, there is some very excellent ones for dirt cheap, you could have some custom made even for the cost of speed tree. I had a good set of flora for one area for under 150 bucks. a bargain, but good quality.www.garagegames.com/developer/torque/contentpacks/

You have to understand that the quality of trees in speedtree is good but even i could create trees that are of equal quality. The trees arent really worth 10k. What your really paying for is the code that allows you to procedurally generate a forest in which you can include plants and or any other speedtree assets. You can also customize the trees a little, but this is very limited and you cannot take a speedtree assest and bring it into Max or Maya and alter the tree to make it your own. This is something that i do not like. However if you are serious about intergration of the code to run with torque then i would seek a company that does this type of work. You will need a hefty budget so i hope your ready to shell out alot of cash. Hopefully your cost for intergration doesnt exceed the cost of speedtree. On a personal note i feel that speedtree is good if you are happy with the trees that they have and you need huge dense forests. Other than a game like Oblivion I dont really see the need for this prog and even though the choice was made to use it at the studio i work for if i had the choice i would not use it. Good Luck with this endeavor!

Main force and reason to use SpeedTreeRT is not wether the trees looks nice or not. Its all about having trees react to wind and for example fireball explosions, dragon wing blows, etc... which you cant do with the trunks and twigs thats around atm.

Well Gabor's team did it once, and so have others. Remember these ;)Main force and reason to use SpeedTreeRT is not wether the trees looks nice or not. Wind data comes from the code that drives speedtree rt as well as the rendering, LOD and such. Explosions, and or dragon wings would have to be added to the source code and probably through whatever engine your using, but it would not be automatic by any means. Speedtree assets are not affected by anything but wind and lighting. You could do this with your own models instead of buying speedtree but this would be very time consuming either way. DL out.

I can integrate SpeedTree RT into Torque Game Engine Advanced. I send screenshots on your mail.

Did you integrate that yourself? Can you show some of those screenshots?

Are you a TGEA licensee, Dimon?

I have integrated SpeedTree, but failed to bring this work to the end because our team has moved to a different engine.
