Introducing "The Demons of Corrath"

by Justin Mayhew · in Torque Game Builder · 11/09/2008 (9:42 am) · 17 replies

Hey guys,

My name is Justin, and I am a Game Art Student. I have recently been creating a design document to "The Demons of Corrath," (or just TDoC). It has taken me 10 weeks, but I am about to begin production. It is a 2D hack'n'slash similar in scope to Golden Axe or Dungeons and Dragons Arcade. I am going to be building it on TGB of course, and I wanted to introduce myself and the game to the community.
The huge amount of content that I have planned is to much for me, so to start I am making the first level and cut scene. If it proves successful, maybe I might plod onward with the game. The time frame I am setting up for this is 10 to 12 months, and yes I am building it solo (about 15-20 hours per week).

It makes me sick to my stomach that I can't post the concept art for this game to show all you guys on this site.

Self Assessment of current abilities:
Art: 78/100
Programming: 35/100
Design: 68/100
Determination: 137/100

So with that, I want to invite you guys to follow along. I'm sure I am going to have questions as I hit a wall time and again (especially with the programming). I plan on making a post about the progression of the game every Sunday. I hope to get a website going also, with a link here I can show you the art and so forth.

Wish me luck

Justin (a.k.a Corrath)

And why can't you do that? Putting a (c)<year><name> on the image is sufficient protection for most people.

I think the problem is that he doesn't know how to add concept concept art to this post. Honesty? do't think that GG has released that feature yet, but Ted Southard made a good point, why post concepts that can be stolen? If you are still desire a website, that wouldbe your best bet and in the midst of that copywrite your idea. http://www.copyright.gov/forms/

My point was the opposite, actually :) People really aren't going to steal the concepts, most likely, and those that do are probably lacking in enough talent to bring it to the 2d/3d asset stage. And if that actually does come to pass, then he has legal recourse. In any event, I'm a big fan of people not being scared of others lifting their ideas, simply because history has shown it to happen so rarely that it doesn't merit the fear that people assign to it.

Good call on the copyright website anyway, since that's always good information.

@Justin: When you post, check out the MarkupLite link that shows you the tags you can use, and you can show your concept art that way, if that's what you meant.

Edit: My spelling sucks today.

based on the MarkupLite page, it meantions linking to your concept arts from a website. If you don't have the money... freewebs.com is always available?

Hey Justin,

Sounds like a great concept, although not an MMO at all unless I missed something.

Anyways, I'd love to see the concept art and I can host it for you if you want to avoid the hassle of freewebs/imageshack/etc. Just send me an email patrickadesso (at) gmail.com.

Yea! There we go. That wasn't to hard at all.

Well now, where was I? Umm... oh yes, I haven't posted my progress lately so here is a recap. I am currently working on TGB tutorials so I can start creating my game images, while also doing a massive poster concept art (2' x 12''). The poster I have penciled in all the way and I just scanned it in to Photoshop and Im starting to airbrush it. It will definately be a portfolio piece.

Yea, I only have 15 hours a week to do all of this stuff so Im moving at a snails pace. But patience pays off I just need to keep hammering away.

So stay tuned, this is for real! I have poured way to many hours into this to turn back, it must be done.

ETA on concept poster: Feb 21st ( God I hope its done by then...)

why not start up a bolg on this site?
you project looks very interesting.

BTW, I'm working on my own project and I'm a little curious what sorts of things go into a professional design doc (they didn't have a games course when I went to Uni.)

@Justin: You'll need to make a smaller version for the forums here, since I don't think they crop. That said, I like that wallpaper. The guy with the sword and flaming hand looks like he's about to get pwned though... ;)

As Samuel said, you should probably do a blog for better visibility for your project, especially when you have things to show like concept art.

Thanks for the input guys, I am going to start a blog on this now.

@Sam Cartwright: In my game design doc I just visualized everything that you see when you activate the game clear to end of the first level, and then I drew a shizload of FAST little rough images to give a blurry outline of what and how the game will play. As soon as the first level starts you immediately realize the need for the back frame of the game, such as abilities, questline, storyline, music, and enemy drops, little things and big things, weapons etc.
I then filled in all those, everything. Even if it was shaky, I gave it a hypothetical idea, because everything else in the game will depend on everything else being there. Most or all of the these ideas for storyline, or weapons will probably change. But atleast I have a first draft, a starting point.
I also studied other games such as Golden Axe the arcade game, Dungeons and Dragons Arcade "The Tower of Doom" and Demon Crest for SNES. All of these games gave me some insight as to how and why I need to set my game up previously.

@Ted

Yea the sword wielding fireball guys (Onyn is his name) is about to get pwned for sure. But he is going to take out about 8 or 9 of them with himself.
I'll get started on the blog.
