Building Pack Poll

by Krystian Lahage · in General Discussion · 11/02/2008 (8:17 am) · 6 replies

Because my budget is very, very low, I was planning to sell a building content pack. I wanted to know which would be preferred, RTS or FPS. Sci-Fi, Urban, Middle-Eastern, Alien or other. Just tell me which genre and which theme you would buy. And how much would I sell the pack for if it had 10 buildings and 15 props, all with collision and textures? Just give me your opinion, thanks.

We need a Scifi or Alien pack, there are a large number of Urban/Fantasy or modern houses, but very little futuristic are hard to find. There is only 1 that I have seen, and its not well optimized.

sorry there is the Tim Aste ones, as well, but again, They arent cunductive to "scifi buildings" with interiors and mostly just structures.

Many lean to Sci-Fi, while others want Medeival. nobody has asked for Middle East that I have seen.

Just seems most people are focusing on Sci-Fi or Medeival themes now. Even the Textures on the Internet reflect the common interest for those 2 themes.

I guess if the Game Community is going to be stuck in the Medeival / Sci-Fi category, might as well make 2 Packs to cater to them since thats mostly what the Devs want to build.

As a side note, People all over the world are having it financially tough trying to make ends meet.
It is often difficult to get the bills paid on time when Job Layoffs are happening Left and Right.
I think your doing the right thing by offering Packs to the Game community, since it seems we all want to play Games while the rest of the world begins to smell like decay.

I am curious to see some of your planned Content, as some artists work is more appealing then others.
Have any sample Pictures?

Thanks for the opinions. I do have some sample work from a middle eastern building I was working on. Although I never finished the windows or small details. I guess then that I could make 2 different packs. Any suggestions for what should be in them?

Real Medeival houses were not as fancy as the Medeival theme most textures would lead you to believe.
They were actually less fancy and more of the poor villager type. Sure there were houses with the crossboards applied on the outside and yes many of them seemed to have larger floors as the building went up... but those were really not as wide spread and only in city areas where lots of people would visit or stacked together like Condos in america.
Most medeival times were harsh and poor, their floors were barely as smooth as a wall. The interiors were small and cramped and every space was used for something. Getting accurate pictures of those real medeival time homes is few and far between.. I spent alot of hours looking for accurate details and most homes were destroyed during that time period as were many of the abbeys and churches. Whats left of them is often just a small section of floor or a wall. But with those few resources to draw imagination from, you can tell it was a very poor and very harsh time to be a human.
Street lamps and Posts didn't come out until somewhere in the 16th early 17th century and gas lanterns powered by methane soon folowed.
Medeival time period was somewhere about 800 AD to nearly the 16th century.
The point is, to help you get some accurate information for you to make a killer Medeival period Buildings pack and you'll need to use some textures that can accurately reflect it.

Sci-Fi can be a matter of taste.
Almost as though a childs scribble could appear to be a building if you stare at it long enough. It's subject to taste or preference. The best Sci-Fi i see are often hand drawn pictures, colored with pencils and shaded.
The sort that look awsome on paper but never make their way to the game industry.
Getting inspiration for Science Fiction isn't always easy. Probably as rough to get inspired as it is to get a picture of a real medeival home for the poor villagers.
If your imagination is still as fertile as when your a child, then you'll likely make a great Sci-Fi pack.

I really hope this post can help give some insight or maybe stir your imagination.
Great game content is often derived from what we know and elaborated upon using imagination.

I personally would spend a LOT of money to obtain some various sea worthy Ships with Sails.. such as the Columbus period might use. I am still learning Houdini Apprentice HD and it would be a great boon to have a model to work with.
