Atlas Terrain?

I have heard that the Atlas terrain is not intended for online multi player games. In fact it doesn't work for these kinds of games, and that you needed to use the old legacy terrains instead?
Is this true?

"The Atlas terrain system, which is a paging terrain system that supposedly allows one to create huge terrains, is severely crippled. You cannon edit, create, or paint terrains in game. Instead, you have to use a bunch of 3rd party tools and import terrain information into the engine. Even with these 3rd party tools the engine has trouble generating large terrains. The terrain doesn't cast or receive shadows and does not work across a network."

The last bit is false. The problem with reviews is that they can become dated. I'm glad you took the time to ask here, that way you find out what updates have been made to the engine.
On an unrelated note, it makes me smile when I read this:
Awesome =)

Quote:...you have to use a bunch of 3rd party toolsThere are different tools that can generate the Atlas terrain, just like there are different programs that can create JPEG or PNG files. I could say "you have to use a bunch of art tools", or I could say "You can use professional quality tools such as Photoshop or GIMP."

Quote:First and foremost, the documentation is incomplete, outdated or flat-out wrong in some cases. Everything is contained on a wiki, but the community are expect to update it. -Feb 16, 2007Then I read a review that is posted only 3 months later:
Quote:One of the major complaints people had with this engine was the documentation. However in addition to the community docs and WIKI it now comes (for the first time I believe) with a very good, complete set of official, documentation which is all relevant and current to the release it's bundled with. It includes screen shots , and a thorough explanation of every aspect of the engine , as well as defines and illustrates the workflow for art/content creation and import.
It is a complete professional manual for the product and it makes a world of difference in being able to effectively use the engine. I found that many of the issues that were causing me frustration were due to misconceptions I had.
Awesome =)

Just like TGE, TGEA is inherently designed for multi-player gaming. If Atlas terrain broke that, it would not have made it in as a feature. Now, if you are talking about massive MMO style terrains, you would definitely want to integrate a paging system for the terrain. Outside of that, nothing about the Atlas Terrain system breaks multi-player.
