Using Licensed Vehicles...?

by Duey Oxburger · in General Discussion · 10/11/2008 (10:37 am) · 2 replies

Hey all,

If I want to make a flight-sim based on the F-22 Raptor, do I need to obtain permission from Lockheed-Martin, or do I just need to acknowledge them at the beginning of the game?...

Probably a complex subject, but I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say about it...

Thx,

Stef

From what i understand you can use Military vehicles in a general sense, but you cant use them in a specific game. Like you cant make a f22 simulator, but if your simulator lets your use a f22 in its stage, then i dont think anyone is going to stop you. Most military hardware is not copyrighted its the brand names that are, like you cant put lockheed martin on there anywhere.

To be safe though, it never hurts to write a clean and clear letter to lockheed martin, regarding your game and what vehicles you intend to use. You never know you might even get some legal documents with some cool technical specs. It never hurts to try. Worst cast scenerio, you have to create a FX-22 ish plan, and name it something else. and just transplant the names.

Some names are copyrighted, some aren't, it varies vehicle to vehicle. So you could use the F-22 designation but not the Raptor part, pretty sure Raptor is copyrighted though it may not be. There's a reason why the Hummvee pack was renamed to the Recon Vehicle Pack here on GG. Hummvee, is actually copyrighted.
