QuArK Sphere Builder

by Eric Forhan · in Torque Game Engine · 11/12/2002 (1:41 pm) · 6 replies

One of the complaints I've seen many times is how Torque can't do curved-surface interiors very well. Here's our chance to make a change and possibly get a sphere builder put into QuArK. I know I could use this in several of my own projects, so with that in mind I went to a QuArK forum and created a poll. I wholeheartedly ask that you vote. This could be the simplest addition with the most visual return to date. All it takes is showing the QuArK developers we want it. :-)

QuArK already has sphere builders Eric

Here's the economy deal:
check out the rombobicuboctohedron
---this is a close representation with few faces.

However, the real deal is patches (like Q3)
These are already in QuArK...Rather than set up the poll
you are talking about, we should work to get the patch capability into Torque :)

Thanks, Desmond.

I'd like something a bit more round than the rombobicuboctohedron. I've gone as far as importing a qradient sphere (doesn't work too well).

I've never tried patches in QuArK, though I see the potential! I wonder if there's any interest in adding this?

What is a gradient sphere Eric? Sounds interesting... did you add it to one of the add-ons?

The patches are technically known as bezier curves and use control point to manipulate the curvature--makes it real easy to define almst any curve. I would like to attempt adding these to TGE although time constraints are tremendous right now. This objects are surface hogs however; Valve software made the conscious decision to NOT add them to Half-Life because of this. But I would still like the option.

I'm sorry; I meant Q3Radiant, which I believe was the official QuakeIII map editor before GMax came out. I know there's still GTKRadiant which is a community effort, but I don't know if it supports spheres.

About patches, Corvidae just stated at the Torque Enhancement Project that he's working on Bezier patches as well, and would be willing to share the code to help hash out some bugs he's getting. You're very welcome to join, if you like, Desmond.

He's also opened up his Interior transparency mod to work on as well.

An update: Corvidae has worked on patches and has posted some of the problems he's run into along the way, as well as what code he's done for it so far. The thread is here(must be registered as a programmer to see it).

He's also made available his transparency code for interiors so others to tweak, if necessary, and add things such as breakables or EMAPs (for glossy window look) to.

Whether for the community, or to collaborate with others to help your own project more quickly advance, we invite you to join and help!
