Money is not an issue whatsoever!!

Based on

ease of Modeling, Animation, and Texturing!
&
ease of getting models into Torque with the proper Collision mesh and such!

If anyone has any comments on different 3D applications please let me know! ty =)

P.S-sorry for asking so many questions on 3D modeling programs I am still searching for the best one for game design!

I got another question I'm looking at getting some XSI Training from Digital Tutors Great Site!

But I was wondering If I should bother getting The Getting started with Modeling or the Getting started with Animation DVD's Or should I just get the Character Series. and other intermediate ones?

Also should I use XSI for .dif's also or just stick with constructor? I dont think their's a .dif exporter for XSI?

For dif use constructor.

the digital tutors stuff is pretty good I have a lot of them myself

softimage commissioned this one to give away with XSI 7.

It is free from their site:

DT The Artist Guide to XSI

it will give you kinda a crash course of all of the features. Then I would prolly go to the modeling .

You might want to consider one of their Bundles.

For Game realated stuff there is their XSI Next gen series wich I listed above But Noesis Intereactive Make a whole series of XSI video geared totally towards Video game animation Grated they are all targeted at the source Engine but They are good training for doing game characters none the less.
Noesis Interactive XSI Taining

oh and i3Dtutorials.com are not bad but I think for games the Next gen stuff from DT and the Noesis Stuff are the best.

same here i am using xsi ever used it be for but after 2h of use i feel like i know all the basic stuff after 1 week i feel like its my home. i am still trying to find out how to do some stuff in it though. man its so easy to use it is the best modeling program there is i played with maya and the other good ones but nothing can compare to xsi. i am amazed not many own it the only thing xsi really lacks is loading other 3d program files. if i load .obj its fine but all the other files don't load the exact way they should of been. its still good though even if it don't load quite right with other files. the one thing is still lacks is the exporter to dts files he started working on it again but i don't know if he still is now.

I'm really new to 3-D modeling, and downloaded Blender a few months ago. After doing the wikibooks 'Noob to Pro' tutorial I was able to make several objects and import them as dts.

Blender is free and I think pretty user friendly once you get used to it. I also think any 3-D program is going to take some getting used to, and is a matter of preference as many say.

xsi is free as well lol its only free for indie's and if your here on gg to make games well then your a indie. :P i not using the mod tool though i using the full on 7.01 release. i don't know whats different in the free mod tool version as i have not used that one but i think it comes with just about everything but the ice stuff i think.

i used blender for a long time as well but once i started using xsi i said forget it as it takes for ever to make things in blender. xsi to make a animation all you really need to do is click and move click and move its just so much faster if i was to make a animation in blender it would take days. with xsi i can do it in less then 30min to rig it and animate 1 time. character it takes little longer to rig though took me about 1h just for the rigging and this is a complex rig i talking about.

XSI is free for indies?

OK, I see it... the XSI "Mod Tool".

But how good is the exporter for Torque? Torque is not even listed on the page where they list which engines it can be used for.... it says "some" of the engines, so I assume Torque is one of them?

the exporter works ok if its just a object but for animation you need to set it up in xsi and then export it to something else open it in that program and use that exporter in that program. it works fine with many textures and some say it works with like a glass texture that you can see though at lest i think that's how you make things see though. i have not tried making see though walls though but in order to make that work you have to do it with both sides not just one side.

the exporter for xsi is here www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/57345 Matt Summers said hes working on the exporter again not to long ago but now that the site changed. i don't know if he still is or not i hope so so it can be a complete exporter finally. once the new site changed though no one has posted in it.

i also think some say animations can be exported though but you have to use a harder way of making animations to do it. i not going to spend days or hours more just to do the harder way of animation. basically the exported is almost complete just with things left out of it to make it not quite complete. i might mail matt to see if hes still working on it he said he did not want to work on it. t3d he said will not need any exporter but he don't get that not everyone is going to buy t3d mostly with the price changing. i still see 100s or 1000s still going to use tgea. i will be using t3d though but i might want to use tgea every now and again so i would still like a fully working exporter.

FORGET IT.

If I can't exported animated meshes to .dts then XSI is useless for me given my needs.

I have a lot of respect for SoftImage / XSI and it speaks volumes that Autodesk would wish to acquire it, but 90% of my modeling is animated meshes, so I will have to wait until the day XSI can do animated .dts meshes.

I know the stinkin exporter is'nt finished but I was thinking of using XSI to model then animate Export into say Blender or 3DS Max then into Torque for Animated Meshes!

There will be an updated version of the XSI DTS exporter available in the next few weeks. Also the currently released version does support skeletal animation, but does not export .DSQ's. (Meaning that the animation is stored inside the DTS.) The currently buggy new version supports .DSQ, material properties and many of the other missing features.

We are currently debugging SRT issues with nodes that we found after having updating the XSI SDK to version 6.x and using new API calls. Just want to make sure the exporter is a step forward and not backward in terms of features and functionality.

Also, Torque3D will have COLLADA support so in 6-12 months pretty much any 3d app that can export COLLADA can create Torque3D content. So far I am of the opinion that direct to DTS options will be prefered by most artists untill the COLLADA pipeline is more mature. But the art pipeline for Torque3D is one of GG's main focuses so we should see a few nice things at release.

I have converted several of the stock TGE assets to XSI format as well. So the next exporter update will also come with the Orc, Elf, Crossbow and Buggy in XSI scene and XSI ModTool format.
