Alright im hoping the community could help me out here, im trying to come up with a way to create realistic looking planets for space. I came up with a few random ideas and the best one sofar seems to be a solid model mesh with another mesh slightly transparent for clouds on the outside of it, and it doesnt look terrible. At the same time though it definetly looks cheap. Anyone have any ideas?

It all depends on how advanced planets you need.... if they are just sceenery, and the player wont get close to the surface... a DTS model will do fine ... most of the effects like atmosphere etc (like the things Guy have done) is made by adding materials to a simple DTS sphere.

Well for what we are building players wont be able to land on the planet or enter the atmosphere, but i would like to have say like trade lines were you can see ships orbiting, stuff like that. So more or less its just scenery. Im sure for the trade lines though we can do just simple animations of extremely low poly ships or a rotating texture.

Well it all depends on how close to the planet the player can see. so it's all up to you ... but for your needs of a planet, considering your looking at maby having textures for orbiting ships a DTS sphere will be more then enough. if you use TGEA you can use materials to get a sophisticated effect with atmophere without locking up too mutch computing resources.
