Getting Ready for the Torque Game Engine and Torque Game Builder

by GoraShrine · in General Discussion · 08/30/2008 (1:02 am) · 14 replies

Hello.

I have been talking to my parents about the Torque Game Engine and the Torque Game Builder, and I have been saving some money for about 3 years now, it is what I call a change box, any change I get I put it in the box and let it stay there until I want or need something, well I opened it up and I had 1500 dollars!

So I have just purchased a new computer, and I have set it up for the Torque Game Engine and Torque Game Builder.

I have one of the best graphics cards, for 3D and 2D gaming!

Now the computer is ready, it has three different types of operating systems, also three different hard drives, all with 500 gigabytes. As you can see this computer has been edited to fit my doing, I have my own built Linux, Mac OS and Windows XP. (I chose not to get vista since it has quite a few bugs.)

I would like to know what program I need for Torque Game Engine so I can make a very good game, and I mean so good that it would be like one of the games on XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3.

Please can you list the programs for me.

Holy bajesus thats a big change box!

Well it depends if you are making a 3D game or a 2D game, and if you will be doing the Art in addition to the programming.

For coding: microsoft visual studio (C++) 2008 express
For scripting: Torsion
For 3D art: Blender
For 2D art: GIMP

That is excellent!!

I am going to go download all of those programs you said!

Now I am doing all the work by myself, and it is both 2D gaming and 3D gaming. Is there a engine for that?

P.S Is there a engine that will make my Torque Game Engine game go to XBOX 360? If there is, is it free?

Torque X and no. It's not free.

Wish I had a change box that large. Lol.
If I were you, I would pick 1 engine and learn it. Pick 2d or 3d first, but not both. Trying to learn an engine is daunting at best. Trying to learn 2 at the same time would be too discouraging.

Hmmm, I see.

So I have chosen Toque Game Engine, I will get it soon!

Also I have Blender and Microsoft Visual Studio (This came on my computer!).

If you aren't already familiar with the basics of the torque engine, you should buy ($50) Ken Finney's 3D Game Programming All-in-One Second Edition book. Covers almost everything but Artificial Intelligence, but there are many free resources on GarageGames that you can use to your liking.

Wait a second... To install OS X, you NEED a Mac (unless you want to violate the EULA for OS X).

And TGE + TGB = $250

So that means you need to have bought a mac with $1,250 or less...

The only computer that can hold 3 hard drive bays is the Mac Pro... But that is WAY more then $250...

Now that doesn't even talk about the costs of XP...

I think you know what I'm getting at...

Anyways, your question should be answered, so here is my list of what to get:

TGB:

1. Photoshop
2. SuperPNG plug-in

TGE:

1. Houdini
2. Photoshop
3. Torsion

Graphics on the cheap: GIMP (Linux/Windows, free), or Pixelmator (Mac, not expensive). Bonus: Your PNGs are not messed up :)

Houdini has its uses for TGB also, I believe. 3D characters should be possible. Rendering art from 3D to various 2D sizes is also a good use.

Use Smultron to edit scripts on the Mac.

"Now the computer is ready"
"three different types of operating systems"
"three different hard drives"
"Linux, Mac OS and Windows XP"

You do know OS X on a PC is illegal, right? Read the EULA. Not only is it illegal to use the software on PC hardware, but to get a copy of OS X that works on a PC requires a hacked version which is also illegal.

Gahh, I didn't know it was illegal :(, I got a friend to do it all for me, he already had the CDs and stuff I just bought a computer and put in the hard drives, he did the OS stuff, except Linux I made that one :O and you can have a Linux and a windows in the same computer :p anyways I will remove the hard drive with mac on it then... Thanks for telling me, I didn't want it to be anything bad.

Thanks again for telling me I won't be on for a few days then since I need to get it removed..

Pfft don't worry about it - everyone has illegal stuff on their PCs

@ GoraShrine, Congratulations !! you sound very excited and motivated. Don't lose that, it's an edge =)

@ Rybo, I beg to differ.
Some of us keep our systems squeeky clean, No porn, illegal software, or out-dated trialware.
I personally like knowing that my system, though low-end by todays standards, is still free of anything that isn't licensed or isn't proper for my kids to be looking at.

On the other hand I know a co-worker that has nothing licensed at all... he keeps telling me about his most recent aquisition almost on a daily basis.

Both sides of the coin I guess. =)

@Gora
Grats on getting OSX running on a non-mac. Some people really struggle with that. In my book, if you own the license, and aren't running a single license concurrently on multiple systems, more power to you. Apple disagrees with me though ;p

@Scott

Porn built the internet. How dare you turn such a cold shoulder on it!

Your change box > my change box :D

Best of luck to you and try not to get frustrated or discouraged, by starting small, and come back to the forums to talk about what you've been working on.
