Finished: Mission editor doc

by Victor Didra · in Artist Corner · 10/31/2002 (4:07 pm) · 9 replies

Here is the result of the Mission Editor discussion I started a while back.

Edit following Jeff's suggestion(see below): The purpose of this doc is to bring together a list of of fixes, additions, small tweaks, and adjustments for the Mission Editor. So the guys who should be reading this are Programmers who are looking to help the artists out, and Artists who have ideas to contribute to the doc.

Any feedback should go here, and if there are enough potential changes, I'll post an updated version later.

Nice work! I just looked at it briefly but it looks very useful.

I think I posted this at the worse possible time thanks to the IGC. So *Bump*.

Great, Vic! Are you going to offer it as a resource?
And, do you want comments/corrections? I haven't read it yet, btw. ;-)

Actually, I did post it already. Either I threw it in the wrong place, or they didn't feel it was an appropriate resource. Perhaps they didn't like the rant at the end :)

Definately post comments and corrections. If there is enough interest, I'll post it again with changes. Additional features that fall into the range of the doc are welcome as well. I know that I didn't hit everything.

Victor,

I read your document. To be honest, I really don't understand what you were trying to accomplish. It is not made very clear at the beginning of the document, and it becomes more murky the further one reads. The rant at the end does not help either.

Not to say that things can't be better, but I think the games shown at IGC are performance proof that great things can be done with the Torque.

I consider your document a diatribe, and if it was not intended to be such, then I'm sorry. If you are trying to solicit the help of the community to have art creation be better and easier for Torque games, then some additional explanation may get more attention to your views.

I am definately not saying that great games can't be made with it as it now stands. I'm trying it myself.

Ignoring my rant for the moment, the rest of the document is simply a list of changes, improvements, and tweaks that I and others from the above referenced thread believe will improve productivity. Some of them are small improvements, some of them probably not possible for the time being.

Essentially I just wanted to get these into one area where someone with spare time could page through, find an improvement they might be able to contribute, complete with description, and do it.

Now, the rant might be a bit of a diatribe. The document could probably have done with out it, but it's there now. After the IGC, I think it probably will do no good. Anyone who is interested in pitching in on this probably isn't making many of the attacks I was talking about anyway.

Perhaps an update could be posted by someone, if there is someone actually coding these suggested updates?

I am relatively new to this, but it would be nice to hear updates occasionally, if someone is implementing these suggested changes.

Vic,

I read through your paper a couple weeks ago. I don't recall finding any errors or easier ways to do anything you had listed. The rant somewhat took away from the idea you wished to change things, but as you've said--it's already there.

At any rate, you are welcome to join the Torque Enhancement Project and head up a project to address these issues--or at the very least see if anyone else is interested in doing so as well. Maybe we could even find a way to get it on a TUTOS or PHP manager. There are no guarantees it would be implemented directly, but could be made as a resource.

I know some of the additions would be quite nice, and perhaps several teams would co-operate and donate work to get it finished. The in-editor model viewer is one I can recall from the top of my head that would be nice.

Eric,

Thanks for the offer, but I'm afraid I have to refuse. I only have 3 months left before I ship out for Marine boot camp, so I have no spare time.

I am working on a game right now, if we manage to get any of these enhancements in, rest assured we will be releasing them to the community.

As for the document, do what you want with it. If someone decides to update it at some point, that will be great. Obviously I won't be around to handle it.
