You can get an academic license of 3ds max 5 for $500 at Journey Education. HUGE price reduction from the retail version.

Do read the student license agreement : you might not be allowed to make any commercial modelling with the student version, ie if your models are for a commercial project, chances are you can't use the student licensing for that...
For example, back in the days I used CodeWarrior on the pre-OS X Mac, I had a student license, and thus was not allowed to produce commercial software, not even shareware : only personal stuff, or freeware.
So check that out.
But, a lot of software companies offer competitive upgrades from student to full licenses for a price that usually less than buying a full license in the first place, ie student license + upgrade <= normal license price...
Good luck !!

No, almost any school qualifies. As long as you can receive an actual degree or diploma from your school, you should be ok.

You may want to look into G-Max.
It is a game specific version of Max and
it is supposed to be cheaper. NOTE: I have
heard there is not an export plugin to get your
objects into torque yet.

good luck,

I really doubt that there will ever be a G-Max plugin for Torque.

The reason G-Max is so "free" is that the game companies must pay an outrageous sum of money for the use in relation to their game.

GG does not have he resources to make that investment, and the programming resources required to make the exporter would be better spent creating the exporter for Blender and/or updating the Milkshape exporter.

High School students can qualify for it, you just need to follow the instructions for them to verify that you are indeed a current student at a school.

As for gMax, ya its too bad there is no exporter for it yet because it really could be a one stop tool for anything art related... but money talks so that's the end of that.
