GarageGames Group on Vimeo

Hey everybody!
We've been using Vimeo to host a the Torque videos on our site. I've already had some of you make me a contact on Vimeo, but we decided to take it a step further and create a GarageGames group on the site. If you have a Vimeo account, feel free to join the group here.
Feel free to add Torque-related videos to the group or just subscribe to see what the GG community is up to. To add your videos to the group's stream, go the video's Vimeo URL, click on the "add" tab in the upper right hand corner and check the "GarageGames" group box after you've become a member.
So why should be excited about Vimeo? We've added Vimeo functionality to all our blogs, resources, etc. If you want to add Vimeo videos to something you post on GarageGames.com, use the following format:
[vimeo=(# of vimeo video) width=(#) height=(#)]
So an example (without the square brackets):
vimeo=1054612 width=640 height=480
Note: You must include the width and height in order for the tags to work.
Looking forward to seeing more videos of people's work!

@Novack, well, the whole point in Vimeo is that its video quality isn't complete crap, unlike Youtube. Which makes a lot of difference when you're trying to show small elements such as text, or details on a model or the like. Youtube's compression is also much worse.

In that case, I would sugest Viddler.
The player options, specially the tags/comments system make it the best on the net. You can also point a specific place in the "playbar" and the player will start buffering from that point. (Demo video: www.viddler.com/learn-more/)
Give it a try, and you guys will see the enormous potential it has for walkthroughs and tutorials.

@Novack, that actually does look like a good possible alternative. The tagging of stuff in the playbar (seems similar to the Flickr tags thing) is also very cool.

As a result I have had Jacob add both Viddler and weGame support to Markup Lite. Examples below:

Just when I get our fearless web dev Jacob to add video support Vimeo goes and pulls a stunt like this. While this act does appear to be a bit snobbish, I am sure they have quite a bit of data that shows things like raid videos having the biggest drag on resources while not offering up much of a return in things like ad revenue. It would be very hard on their part to ban a certain subset while allowing other things. That being said I think they went about messaging this very poorly and resulted in a blog that now has over 800 posts. As soon as they brought creativity and art into the discussion it was all over.As a result I have had Jacob add both Viddler and weGame support to Markup Lite. Examples below:

Viddler is a bit trickier to deal with as they route people instead of just plugging the id into the url. So to add a Viddler video you will need to go to the "Embed This" button underneath the video. At the very end of the code you will see something that looks like this name="viddler_cdc0fa61". You will then use the code after viddler_ for the tag (cdc0fa61 in this example) for the markup lite tag.
[viddler=# width=# height=#] no close tag. Example below uses viddler=cdc0fa61 width=437 height=333.

wegame is very straight forward. The end of the url is what you use for the tag.
[wegame=name width=# height=#] Example below uses wegame=Aste_Combo_Pack_1 width=480 height=387

Awesome! Nice swift solution there guys, good job.
Edit: I am painfully reminded of this Penny-Arcade when thinking of the Vimeo staffers' attitudes:

Quote:While this act does appear to be a bit snobbish, I am sure they have quite a bit of data that shows things like raid videos having the biggest drag on resources while not offering up much of a return in things like ad revenue.I imagine that's true, since their excuse about video size has no merit given the fact that there is a hard cap on uploads, regardless of genre of video. However, I do think that their immense snobbery in this was unnecessary, they could have just said "Video game videos don't generate enough ad revenue for their comparative prevalence."
Quote:It would be very hard on their part to ban a certain subset while allowing other things.Agreed, which is why I think their supposed statement that game videos which depict whole cloth creations is worth exactly nothing.
Quote:That being said I think they went about messaging this very poorly and resulted in a blog that now has over 800 posts. As soon as they brought creativity and art into the discussion it was all over.This is the main thing that irritates me. I don't see how [url="http://vimeo.com/240975"]this crap[/url] (by one of the snobass staffers no less) is somehow "more creative" than even the most unpolished work of community members here, which take infinitely more skill and work than setting up a camera for a stupid time lapse garbage video of an interstate.

EDIT: Although bizarrely he completely contradicts himself in response to another indie game developer asking the same question... craziness.

Having trawled through quite alot of the comments, there's this from a Vimeo staff poster in response to a question about a game dev demo reel.Quote:

Yes, if you are demonstrating software that you built, it will be allowed. This does not extend to maps or mods for existing video games.

WeGame and Viddler both seem to have pretty decent quality. WeGame seems like it has a more polished site, which for some reason matters to me. Anyone have experience with both, and able to compare the two? I can't seem to find the file size/bandwidth limitations on WeGame.

Someone put up a game developers group on Vimeo. It might be worth joining if only to make a statement.

After reading vimeos blog, they sound like a bunch of "Old School" computer nerds to me. Elitist, and not too smart. Oh well. I never used them anyway.

You can define the quality of the videos yourself that way. :D
Personaly i use the following settings, the first makes a PNG shot, the second converts the video from almost anything to FLV;
ffmpeg -itsoffset -00:00:04 -i -vcodec png -vframes 1 -an -f rawvideo -s 160x120
ffmpeg -i -r 30 -vcodec flv -b 1100000 -ar 44100 -ab 48

Or how about a better idea? Make your own! Grab a copy of FFMPEG ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ Allow users to upload videos, convert to FLV, play with JW FLV Player www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player You can define the quality of the videos yourself that way. :D

I also agree that gametrailers is a good service, but it has publicity integrated on some videos, and we dont know where that could end.
