GarageGames Group on Vimeo

by Deborah M. Fike · in General Discussion · 07/17/2008 (3:50 pm) · 55 replies

Hey everybody!

We've been using Vimeo to host a the Torque videos on our site. I've already had some of you make me a contact on Vimeo, but we decided to take it a step further and create a GarageGames group on the site. If you have a Vimeo account, feel free to join the group here.

Feel free to add Torque-related videos to the group or just subscribe to see what the GG community is up to. To add your videos to the group's stream, go the video's Vimeo URL, click on the "add" tab in the upper right hand corner and check the "GarageGames" group box after you've become a member.

So why should be excited about Vimeo? We've added Vimeo functionality to all our blogs, resources, etc. If you want to add Vimeo videos to something you post on GarageGames.com, use the following format:

[vimeo=(# of vimeo video) width=(#) height=(#)]

So an example (without the square brackets):

vimeo=1054612 width=640 height=480

Note: You must include the width and height in order for the tags to work.

Looking forward to seeing more videos of people's work!

I really want to make a game where all the characters have googley-eyes, now. That is awesome.

I'm very excited to have this feature now =)

And I can't think of a better first video post by a community member than what James chose. I love hearing other developers laugh at their own bugs too. Gonna be a very interesting few months once this catches on. Now, where's that Kork on Ice video.

Cool adition. Kind of capricious with the video provider choice, but cool anyway.

Can the formatting be added to "Click here to learn how", below when you Post a Reply, in case I forget?

Might this change from Vimeo begin to affect what GG can post there? Certainly can't be good news.

Hmm...looks like we're facing a bit of Murphy's Law here. : /

Obviously, if you guys can't post videos of your games, that's going to be a problem. We'll be looking into Vimeo and alternate solutions here, and I'll get back to you guys when I know more.

Blargh.

@ Don

Wow, I just read through that whole thread and considering the "elitist film school dropout" mentality that seems to be rampant among the majority of the posters, I would say its likely everything in the GG group will get deleted.

From the Vimeo blog about game videos, I get the sense that they don't like videos of CoD, Crysis, etc. Videos people make with FRAPS in a few minutes.

The Vimeo Staff say that
Quote:...The Vimeo staff does not feel that videos which are direct captures of video game play truly constitute "creative expression..."
.

I think us posting videos of Torque games and WIPs shows creativity, and it really isn't just a direct capture from a game. Just my opinion though.

EDIT: added quote tags.

I had to read back through the announcement a few times, and here is my take:

As artists and developers, we should be exempt from these deletions. There is a big difference between someone putting up a PvP montage from Halo 3, and someone from GG putting up a developer video diary that contains game play of the project they are working on.

But i'm not so sure a "tutorial video series" has artistic value, which seems to be what vimeo wants to specialize in. Machinima was the only "video game video" category specifically mentioned as exempt from deletion.

Good point...tutorial video series probably won't cut it with them.

@ Mich

That was my initial take, but after reading through all the comments it seems more like the GG videos will be deleted. The one's in there currently at least, which consist of showing off tech and such, which they seem to be against.

Bleh I wouldn't want to use their site anyways if they think they can tell the world what is creative and what is not.

Maybe it's a capture of something new in the game or a bug they discovered. I'm sorry but people can be very creative when finding new bugs, funny stuff in-game or a new strategy, etc.. screw them.

I think the "creative expression" aspect is just a veil for "it's seriously killing our hardware"

Thats probably part of it Robert, but reading the staff comments they seem like a bunch of snobs who have no idea what real creativity is. The whole 'art is what I say it is' is such bs. I'll never use the site or recommend it.

@mb, Agreed. Someone actually asked about (indie) developer created videos. The staff replies seem to be rather confused on the issue. I have a feeling that any videos of the sort though would get the "Oh, video games -- delete." treatment.

I suppose one option is GameTrailers.

Edit: [url="http://digg.com/gaming_news/Vimeo_to_End_Hosting_of_Gaming_Videos"]Digg[/url] post about the Vimeo ban.
