Who wants to make a game?

by Ryandc · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/11/2008 (2:39 pm) · 16 replies

Ill get straight to it. i want to make a game as im sure everyone here does or is doing but i have no where to start. for the last year ive been going over tutorial

after tutorial on programs like xna, torque game engine advanced, gamestudio a7, modding programs like unreal tech 3, djinni and others ive forgotten, and iv

gotten no further than i was a year ago. The problem is i have no clue whats going on with programming, and shit ive tried, books everything. It just confuses

the crap out of me. im really efficient with 3d programs like maya, zbrush, mudbox, ect because in my first year of collage i thought thats all you need to make

games, man was i wrong.

so what i want to ask is, is there anyone interested in making a game with me, where i provide the 3d and someone does the programing, maybe even get a
team of guys to help on the project. Most of us spend 90% of our day dreaming of our awesomest game concept that will take the world by storm and we think
we can do it all by ourselves. This is unrealistic and will only end in tears. i realized this last night while trying to understand torque game engine (holy crap).
the only way we going to get into the industry is to make fully functional games. i live in south africa and to find someone here to help out is a bit of a mission, but maybe on the net it could work.

i was thinking of a game not to complicated but a good story (where we all contribute on developing), well designed characters, and a unique look.
please if anyone is interested let me know i think it will be fun, and an addition to our portfolios.
also if you are interested give a list of what skills you have, programming or 3d.
my pros are 3d like maya, 3d max, zbrush, mudbox, bodypaint 3d. im also good with photoshop, flash, after effects, combustion and final cut pro, and script writing.
ive done my degree in visual communication. cons everything else not listed above.
and who knows maybe we do take the world by storm.

if this thread is in the wrong place i apologize in advance, this is my first thread ever posted and im still learning about this forum thing.
anyway thanks for your time

Well, we are in much need of a additional Artist on Fantasci: Hidden War. You are welcome to check out our work.

www.fantascihiddenwar.com

check out the weekly blog there thelink is on the first page, 15 months of game development in a open development style. Lots of pics and movies.

And If you hang with us, maybe I can give you a hand with some of your issues.

First and foremost relax. Focus on your strengths. You are a modeller, you want to make a game. Do the enviroment up, make themodels for it. I see so many guys just likeyou, that they focus on the hard stuff when they have the skills to do 75% of the project minus the programming. Programming is only a portion of the pie for game development. And scripting and learning the engine comes with a gradual understanding of how things work with each other.

Wow, entrance exams/SAT score reqs. must be considerably more lax than they where in my day...

IMO, your best bet is to work up a portfolio of your 3D work and make it available. Then the projects will come to you, rather than you having to go looking for a project.

Now what was the point of that? Really? I don't understand why so many people feel that they have to put others down and point out every little mistake to the public. Do you people really feel that insecure about yourselves, that you would resort to insulting complete strangers over a spelling or grammatical error...?

I see so much of this crap on the forums lately, and it sickens me. That is not what these forums, nor this community is built on or stands for. If you have something helpful or even useful to post... by all means, but if you are just going to make an ass out of yourself... please take it somewhere else.

Not that I agree with it or it was called for, but I strongly disapprove of "Internet Illiteracy".

I would hope anyone prospective to future projects or work in anything would have a decent ability to screen themselves, because no matter how much stuff you put out there that may be interesting, investors, publishers, and other developers simply won't touch it if it's written poorly.

It's the whole reason they teach you presentations and business plans as one of your first classes for any business degree in college. You want to get noticed then you have to be presentable or people will turn a blind eye and overlook any point of interest you might have.

That's also the reason one might want to work up a portfolio for their art and other work that they might present online so others might review and consider one as a potential team member or such.

Im not really sure about this hole forum thing. to me its like sending an sms or a quick email. but to moan about something called internet illiteracy is probably the lamest thing i have ever heard. do you guys on this forum just spellcheck everything (that sounds fun). i dont know if i mentioned earlier but im also in need of a good internet illiteracy fixer guy for some emails i wrote.
the reason why the thread looks like that is cause i wrote it in notepad then copied it. this is sunny south africa where we pay a fortune for every byte we download.

ive also seen this on other forums where people go on and on about crap writing and it sucks to have to scroll through all the complaints to get to what you want to read. so maybe in the future you can write your suggestions on parchement and tie it to a pigeon. i should get it.

sorry for being rude like this, but it sucks to be excited about work i can do to help make games then only find post on my spelling. say stuff i can use

im working on my portfolio at the moment so if you need 3d stuff email me at fingerninjas@gmail.com and ill be more than happy to help you out.

I'll put the helpful content of my post first for those who have a hard time reading the whole thing. I can't recommend enough for budding artists to put together a portfolio of work to show off instead of just looking for a project with no examples of work. Having a nice portfolio publicly available will speak leaps and bounds more about your capabilities than your written word alone. Even if it's just your 3 best pieces of work, you will convey your ability to turn imagination into representation.

First, thanks for reading the whole post(which you didn't). And second, thanks for committing the same offense you expect others not to.

Quote:it sucks to have to scroll through all the complaints to get to what you want to read
... as it is likely as painful to weed through the ramblings of the uncontemplated post. I did offer help, but at the cost of one line of complaining ;) Not a bad price for a modest amount of input.

Something i should of mentioned earlier is that im willing to do this stuff for free, if you like what i give you than fine use it. all i want is to put the work i did for you in my portfolio and thats it. i have no samples of personal work ive done on account of theft. only stuff for clients, but thats all just film and motion graphics.
ive been doing 3d for 6 years now, and studied it so im capable (but you going to have to take my word for it).

i thought the best way to get a good portfolio up is to do actual work for people like help them with their game projects. so no i dont have work to show but give me something to do for you and if you like it ill do more. just email me. fingerninjas@gmail.com

Try to give it some time. Study in one area for a few times. Get your thoughts together. Think of it as being in school, learning from the teacher as if it's trying to teach you one step at a time. If you don't understand a course, go back and read the tutorial. Try to see what it's trying to teach and for what cause. Each lesson is educating you in a pacific area in need.
