Programming background needed?

Hello
I have not really had time to use TGB due to work etc but now I have slimmed down my work hours to try and spend more time learning all this game dev fund stuff :)
Anyway I have no programming background and would probably want to get into doing advanced stuff and move away from the basic.
I have always had a problem learning programming so I was wondering would it be better for me to first try and learn Torque script or
to learn say DarkBasic make some simple games with that and then move back onto TGB?
Thank You

Im not in a hurry as I know these things will take time. I just want to use my time constructively and if its quicker to learn say Basic first before T script then I would but if T Script is just as basic then I might as well learn that :)
The plan is to hopefully create some decent games with TGB and then hopefully gather enough reputation for skills i may have (or hope i have lol) to build a group to work on a Torque Game Engine game :)
Thanks again for your advice, I think i will follow it and get on with them tutorials :) and having a good old play!

TorqueScript is pretty easy. You'll be fine as long as you spend time planning your project and instead of just diving right into it and making a huge mess.

Set yourself some goals in small steps, then try to write than in TorqueScript. Don't overreach, and you'll be fine. Artists often pick up at least a little scripting, especially 3D modellers who want to do some advanced things. It's teaching coders art which is hard :)

As you are learning scripting and getting confortable with sticking to syntax, I can't recommend enough the importance of a good IDE. Torsion is nice, there's also Codeweaver. I'm sure there are other IDE's out there as well.

Can someone quickly tell me, instead of me starting a new thread the difference between TGB and Torque X 2D. Which would be better to use?

If I had to pick I would say TGB because its been around longer and seems to have a bigger community of users and shipped games.
Then again C# can be nice, not having a script/code divide can actually be a good thing, and TorqueX IS free. So why not try both '-p

The main difference is TorqueX is for PC/XBOX development and using C# (no scripting language). TGB is for mac/linux/pc development and using C++ and torquescript. If I had to pick I would say TGB because its been around longer and seems to have a bigger community of users and shipped games.

You can always contract a programmer for the more difficult tasks... ;) If you have $ for that.

I have no problems spending the $ but would like to learn the tools etc first and then look into that for later games :)

That will hopefully happen in the future :)I have no problems spending the $ but would like to learn the tools etc first and then look into that for later games :)

You cant learn it in one month, but you can learn a lot of in one month. Other things in next month and after few months you will be able to make a "real game" . So if you want to make a 2D game then my advise is stay with TGB, start with tutorials and learn and learn and learn. Results will come. Good luck to you!
