Terrain Textures (NOOB ALERT)

Ok, well I have TGE 1.5.2, I know how to do most of the stuff I need to make terrain with (terraformer, terrain paint, etc.).
I have this one problem though, I don't seem to be good at making realistic terrains. And I was wondering, how do most people do it? I have Photoshop CS3, and I've been trying to make some... But they all come out horrible! I was just wondering if there were any tutorials on this.

Ok, I mastered the seamless textures, and I created what looks to be a good terrain, but whenever I try to apply it, it looks like:img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1ic0.png

Oops, I got it... Apparently it had to be .jpg, not .png
