A question about Blender export format

by Frappuccino · in Artist Corner · 10/06/2002 (11:25 pm) · 26 replies

Hi,

Sorry I've been unable to find the answer by making searches here, but I would like to know if it is currently possible to work with Blender and make a model that can be somehow exported to a format that can be used inside Torque.

Thanks :)

Fr

Hmmmmm... :)

Now that's a good news !!!

Would you have any hint about the fact that it will convert into prefabs (dif like) and/or "moveable" models (dts like) ?

As of now it's going to be able to do DTS objects.

like now, now ?? ;)
With the freely available version of Blender you can get right now ?? (before the Open Source release)
That's good news, indeed 8p
Btw, I'll be at the Montreal Blender party this saturday, the local version of the big one in Amsterdam to celebrate its birth into Open Source :)
If any GGers in the vicinity show up, we can meet there and ramble about the meaning of 42. ;)

Well Nicolas :) See Ryan's previous post, he says it's for a near future, as I understand it !

But then, he posted a couple hours later,
saying "as of now....", which is what lead me to ask the question the way I did. 8p
Good news, anyhow, and whether it's available now or next week doesn't change much for me, since I can't model, and certainly even less with Blender, the UI of which i've never been able to get familiar with... ;)
I'm just happy that another tool is added to the roster, one that runs on all TGE platforms, and that also has quite a big pool of talented artists that can now contribute to all sorts of game projects around these parts. Reason enough to be happy ?
I like to think so ;)

As of now there is going to be support for DTS objects. As for actually being able to export DTS objects, that will be sometime in the future. :-)

What about .dif ? That would be more than useful, too. How different is .dif from .dts and what is the rough estimate on when either should be available?

I'm in a bind.

I have a demanding day job and a 9 month (and counting) old son. I also want to work on my game. For me coding is not a problem ... I'm not even considering being color blind a problem. :D

Its the artistic/modeling tools thats giving me a hard time. Hmmm. Specifically, I have to decide which tools to support. I know how to use Valve's Hammer editor and I'm trying to pick up MilkShape3D. It's just that I have this very small voice that kept nagging me that I'm using the wrong tools. I'ved taken a look at Blender and it looks Ok.

So can anybody give me a ballpark figure on when the exporter is coming out?

Thanks.

r/Alex

I apologize for sounding pushy.

After x-mas it became that time of the year again. :-) I'd like to have something before March, but I'm moving soon, so we shall see what my time allows.

If your really *desperate* for a blender exporter, you could always Code it yourself...

I believe there is already some incomplete blender exporter code in the cvs...

It's April - any progress? ;)

My interest is based on being a Mac OS X user.. MilkShape looks nice, but it's not an option for me. Blender is in my price range.. :D

I think it's in everyones price range. ;)

A very criptic answer Ryan ;)

I'm also interested in the progress of this exporter...

Do you need/want a hand?

He means it is free.

Ryan is getting married this Saturday so he hasn't had time to work on the exporter recently and likely won't have much time for a while as they get settled in.

He's been in the irc channel (as rjp) a bit recently so you might be able to catch up with him there if you are serious about helping him.

I'd like to help.

Is there a DTS file format reference ? I've been picking through the code, but I'd like a better guide to work from if one is available.

Thanks!

Ryan, Matthew, et al.
I'm sorry. I think my comment was a little terse. ;)

I understood that Ryan was joking about Blender being free :).... But the previous comment was asking about the status of the exporter. Ryan had said he might have something by March and it being April there might have been progress. Ryan seemed to be being tongue in cheek in his response... and I was too. ;) I have no doubt he is busy. Me too ;)... but I would love to help out with the Blender exporter if I can.

I have trouble getting/using IRC channels as I am in Australia, Perth (almost opposite time zones) and have a day job. Ryan getting married is going to place demands on his time (After/during my own marriage had no free time for around a year - and my wife had to get used to sharing her hubby with a computer - Congratulations Ryan BTW!! ). Blender offer a "sourceforge" type interface with forums and docs etc... (link to blender to crystalspace converter -> http://projects.blender.org/projects/blend2cs/) which seems like a good place to host and a good advertisement for Torque... What do people think?

I would love to see the blender exporter completed. At the moment though, I don't have time to help out myself. There isn't any reference to dts...best bets are the milkshape exporter and the dts sdk. It is one hairy file format :)
