Sci-Fi/Fantasy MMO, Could it work?

by Cohen Mcdonough · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 05/11/2008 (4:08 pm) · 16 replies

Could a sci-fi/fantasy mmo work? So imagine it like this, 2 factions, scifi and fantasy. The fantasy has the usual elves, dwarves, dragons, and such and the scifi has the usual aliens and the ocassional human. But what if these two genres met to form a mmo with fantasy creatures who have tech. Imagine this: a elve with a machine gun, kwl right :) So for example there still would be magic and all but it would look more techy and there would be a lot of tech. Some dwarves with cool hi tech axes and dragons with shiny armor. Tell me what you all think of this idea, i will post more about this idea l8r.

Reminds me of Shadowrun, which was a hugely successful PnP game, modest success in literature. It was also the backdrop for a Sega Genesis as well as SNES console rpg releases (I'm the one person on earth who actually liked the SNES version). There was a multiplayer game released under the license as well, but not sure if it was any good, looked kinda stupid to me...

Granted your concept isn't entirely the same, it was more fantasy progressed to corporate-states, but dragons were CEOs and such.

I think you can sell any concept with the right story, art, and presentation.

From an art angle, I wouldn't develop the two factions arts entirely seperately, but have them overlap to show each factions' influence on one-another.

It's kind of hard to imagine elves piloting a ship like in EVE Online...

It'd be pretty cool but you need to be careful.

All I think about when reading about it is WoW crossed with SC (minus the SC guys).

It seems like a fun concept, you will have to provide enough content for each side so that they see the need to cross the lines between fantasy and sci-fi.

It seems like it would be fun though.

Yeah, so like enough tech for the dwarves and ect. and enough regular stuff for the other regular type of dwarves and elves ect. , the main point of this game is to be able to see what a high tech version of a fantasy creature against a normal type would be. As of right now i am leaning towards calling it: EXODUS!

Define your magic well, its easy to say Sci-fi Fantasy but everyone has a different concept of fantasy, even elves and dragons Vary Greatly.

Does magic stop bullets all the time cause its magic, or do you have to weave a shield of a certain level, will you simply say 50 tech points matches 50 magic points for effect.

See where I am going with that?

Does magic have "flavor" where in you cast types of spells, or is the magic/sci-fi simply different skins on the basic combat types.

If you define your tech and tech level well, and do the same with magic you will be fine when you intertwine the rules, but you must have rules for your magic.

Will magic fire be resistant to water? or Just fire that is conjured magically.

The same for all combat, define the effects that the magic creates, and what counters it if anything in Sci-fi and it will be a greatly concieved portion of the game.

Well there is lots of ways to goabout this topic. Fantasci: Hidden War is 7 genres of which 3 are types of Fantasy and 3 are types of Science fiction. www.fantascihiddenwar.com The mechanics this day and age is not so important, games like ultima/final fantasy/wizardry set the settings for most modern games with a fantasy / scifi mix

You're not the only one. I was just replaying it on an SNES emulator earlier this year. :-)

My team is currently developing a sci-fi / fantasy MMO - It is completely possible in an un-awkward way. Still many months till you see more information on this though.
