Hi

Has anyone tried to compile on Mandrake 9.0?
Did it work?

thanks,
Paul

Yep.

You have to recompile Mandrake's version of Mesa to be static. Basically required installing the src rpm and applying a patch to the base and then installing. If you need complete instructions I can provide them.

Thank you, it is working. This is a very good community soon I will be able to answer some of the questions :)

Thanks

Tim:

I would not mind full instructions... (I am coming from Slackware, trying to compile at work using Mandrake, never touched an RPM before in my life)

Stick with slackware.

hehe, I haven't used slackware yet (after 2 years of Mandrake and RH)I should try it.

for the Mandrake 9.0 it is easiest to get the Mesa Source and do a compile. Here are the instructions posted in another forum thread

http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=forums&page=result.thread&qt=5007

btw, Mandrake 9.0 is sweet! (cept when my laptop goes into "sleep" it doesn't like to wake up..) But it is the "multimedia desktop" flavor of my choice

hope this helps.

I hope the nvidia drivers are easier to install on MDK 9.0. Setting up the drivers on 8.2 is a real pain due to their complicated XFree3.3/4.0 combination.

The Nvidia drivers are still a little tricky but I have found the best way to install them is to get the source RPMs form the nvidia site and run rpm --rebuild on them.
this creates rpm packages for your arch. in the /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586* (in my case) then the 2 RPMS can be installed rpm -iv *packages*.

You will have to install Mesa (static libs) before the Nvidia drivers so the proper libraries get set for Nvidia.

You then have to edit your /etc/X11/XF86config-4 file and replace the line in the "Screen" section

Device "nv"
to
Device "nvidia"

With Mandrake 9.0 they have by default excluded the Mesa "GLCore" and "dri" since they were conflicting with the Nvidia drivers and in pre 9.0 you have to manually delete those 2 entries (GLCore & dri). All you have to make sure of is the line-

Load "glx"

exists in the "Module" section.

after editing the XF86config-4 file and saving it press ctrl-alt-backspace (if in GUI mode) and you should see the nvidia logo appear. that is it.

for some neat stuff you can add some lines to the
"Device" section. Add the line

Option "CursurShadow" "1" (<-- this gives you a shadow for your cursur)

there are alot of other features for tweaking your setup as well, here is the readme for the drivers.

Nvidia has really done the linux community good for releasing these driver even if they are not open. It really was the catalyst for "serious" Linux gaming. IMHO

If anyone needs help with this I am more than happy to help.

lol Ryan...

I completely agree with you Paul. Without Nvidia, we wouldn't have any decent graphics. We'd still be using voodoos...
Maybe Ati will open up their eyes one day soon. Their last card to have decent 3d acceleration was the 7500.

Hopefully ATI will release Linux drivers, it would nudge nvidia to get us detonator driver betas!

I'm doing fine without the betas. I'm sure you could get some if you managed to get in touch with the developers.

As for Ati, I have no hope for them. All the work being done on Ati linux drivers is being done by outside parties, without the support from Ati. I don't think they care

Gee. Im envious that you'ved already got Mandrake 9.0. My internet connection is only 28.8 which means I cant download it.

Its hard living in Asia. :( I already ordered the PowerPack but shipping it here cost almost 75% of the purchase cost. I remember buying Mandrake 8.2 and it took 3 months to get here. :(

Oh well, that only means I have to live with my Mandrake 8.2 till January 2003.

I'm still sticking with Mandrake though. They are still the best n00b desktop linux around. My wife who's an MSCE likes it over RedHat. :)

Thats good enough for me.

You could probably get a copy of windows cheaper there :)

Yeah, for some reason the pirate Linux market never really took off...
