The Ultimate Game Level

by John Lane · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 04/15/2008 (10:13 pm) · 13 replies

I wasted many many hours playing GoldenEye 007 then PerfectDark on the N64. Only now has it become clear that I can fulfill my dream to take the one level, the one scenario, and the ultimate weapons and simply enhance a few things that I knew at heart would make it the dream game...at least for me.

SOmeone tell me what you think about:

Board: Complex (ENHANCED GRAPHICS BABY :) )
Weapons: Laptop GUn, Proximity Mines, and what ever else "creams your twinkie"
Scenario: LICENSE TO KILL

Sount fun as hell to anyone else???

I know I am gonna get flayed alive for this comment, simply because I am the only gamer on Earth with this opinion: I hated GoldenEye on the N64. I know it was the big game back in the day, and it did a lot for console FPS standards. However, I just thought it was a crap game visually and in level design.

BUT, I think your concept is a great way to get into development. You will have no shortage of play testers, since there are so many GoldenEye fans. Also, having a proven game example (and level and weapons) to go by helps get some of the design out of the way and get straight to the development.

Know what engine you are going to use? Also, how are things in Tampa? I was thinkin' about driving there from Orlando this weekend to hit up Hard Rock Casino.

Ah, well you know...everyone has thier own opinion and genre, and I agree that the graphics sucked. What can you expect from system that could be upgraded to a maximum of 8Mb's of RAM with a CPU that clocked under 100Mhz...I hold the original Rare developers in high regards for the development of that game, then they did not just re-release it with a few minor upgrades and slap a new name on it...they took what was in GoldenEye that people loved and they put it on mad steroids...the stats, weapons, missions, levels, plot, and replayable elements were, and still are damn near endless and Perfect Dark to this day, has what I beleive to be the best and most flexible multiplayer system. The person or team that takes Perfect Dark 64 and simply slaps better graphics into it, will probably be a very sucessful person or team, in terms of possible profit and popularity as a game developer.

I will most likely be using TGE due to the rep that it has as for being stable, fairly easy to use, and the best bang for it's buck. I am liking the forums and the more I read about this engine and people using it, the more I realize its not impossible to design a game if you are not a programming guru...that has been my mindset since I started teaching myself visual basic when I was 14 years old...I'm 21 now and still barely scratching the surface, but the idea and actual concept of the game engine's role makes much more sense now.

And Tampa...well it's just Tampa lol. Nothing too exciting...Do you live and work in Orlando?

Oh, don't get me wrong. Rare did an amazing job. I'm still wicked impressed with what they were able to accomplish on the N64.

You will be hard pressed to find a better development community than what we have here at GarageGames. Even though TGE is easily accessed, it has a decent learning curve...just like any other game engine. You'll spend a good portion of your startup development learning the ins and outs of the engine. Still, it is truly rewarding to see your concept come to life on the screen.

Yup, I live and work in Orlando. Been here for about....5 years I think?

Depends on what kind of job you are looking for. Programming? Game Development? Bouncer at Makos?

Mike, next time you want to come to Tampa let me know. We could just shoot the shit about computers/games in general, go to my favorite hangout the WhingHouse for a few beers, and maybe hit up Channelside...its a pretty damn nice time there...it beats the hell out of Ybor...10 fold, and there is not really any trouble out there...people seem to be more civilized out there lol.

I wouldn't be much of a bouncer. lol Game dev would be great but I know how hard that is to get into. I'm doing IT work now (imaging computers and support). But I've been wanting to move to Fl or someplace near the water. :)

@John - Next time I'll be in Tampa will be for the Red Sox vs Rays game at the end of this month, but we are heading straight back to Orlando after the game (Which the Red Sox will win btw) =)

However, if I make another trip out I'll let you know.

@MB - Lots of tech work in this city. The money is working for a company that performs IT work for corporations. Either that, or you open up your own IT repair/supplies in SW Florida where there isn't any competition for 20 miles. EA Tiburon (Madden, Superman, etc) is actually about 20 min from my apartment. They are usually always hiring. Lots and lots of simulation jobs out here, if you know the right people.

Someone creamed my twinkie...

I was never any good at golden eye so I didn't enjoy it on the level that some did but I love to see people get excited about their project.

Dealing with tourists? Only having two seasons (blistering summer and mild summer)? 1 hour of traffic in every direction regardless of the time? Hurricane Charlie, followed by 3 hurricanes in less than 2 months?

You aren't missing much =)

Oh, but we do have a new waterpark: Aquatica...it's awesome, but it fills up to capacity by 10:00am and you are stuck dealing with a bunch of nut job tourists.

@John - Sorry for derailing the thread as well. Let us know when you start your project. I'm sure there are others willing to give you a hand or point you to resources you might find useful

SOrry I haven't been back in a few days...I have been researching Blender for the 3d rendering for my project. My question is should I use Blender to design the level? WIll I have the capability to easlily export it into TGE when I am complete? SHould I used a different program for my Complex level textures and meshes?

I won't flame ya Mr. Perry

I too hated goldeneye for the N64 and i've banned it from my household. If anything, i think Perfect Dark is still perfect... except for the graphics. These days you don't see awesome bots or gameplay but instead you see watered down sequels and too many of the same weapons (a gun would shoot but have more power and less recoil in most games) but perfect dark took shooting to a whole new level!

Laptop guns were sentry guns which you could shoot, reload, and let it assist you in shooting
Dragons allowed you to set traps for players or trick someone into going for it
Shotguns did twice the work
Cmp150s made you part of the Welcome comitee
Super Dragons were grenade guns that could shoot bullets as well!
Avengers made sure people knew when i was comming and where not to step (i use remote mines exclusively)

I can go on and on but you get the point. UT would come up second for me because of the types of weapon that assists your gameplay and game style as well as the awesome music. These days it seems as though people are following the EA formula :/
