2D Screen Coordinate to 3D World Coordinate

Has anyone looked into mapping a 2D screen coordinate into a 3D world coodinate? I would like to process a mouse click within the scene and determine (approximately) where in the 3D world that click would be (as a Vector3). Imagine you have a few 3D shapes in the scene, I want to be able to select one by mouse click.
