Any descent online classes to teach me?

Greetings,

Let me introduce myself a little. I first found TGE website lil over a yr ago when i had thoughts of going to
college to learn how to create games, however that was lost due the amount of money i had to pay in order
to achieve this. I am disabled and my wife makes $7 an hour part time. I really do wanna learn but i cannot afford the $$ this type of training will require, any tips hints or tricks will be appreciated.
I am a complete newb to game design, engines, and the lot. I bought TGE recently in hopes to force myself to learn but my comprehension of what im reading is not very good. So what i am asking is does anyone know of a good school or college that has an online course? Something with alot of visual aid would be best. Just hearing what is said or reading it just doesnt sink in very well. I could be lost hope lol.. I could be trying to do to much at once aswell. Im more of a hands on guy and normally self taught, but this world is well foreign to me atm.

Btw, i have enjoyed TGE thus far. Ive been using it to design new missions and its quite nice. the detail is awesome, Props to those who made it.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not aware of any TGE online class. However, I really think it wouldn't do you a whole lot of good, anyway. In my opinion, if you are willing to learn to script (not that hard) and can compile in script resources, you can do 99% of what needs to be done. That's what I've done. Check my profile for my game, and you can see what can be done with no real talent, but lots of drive and willingness to learn :-)

In other words, just start making games. Just do it. Do the first part of your game. Then do the second part. And when you get done with that...do part #3. Rinse and repeat until finished.

You say you've been making missions. Sounds good. What is it you think you need to be taught?

I have only been designing landscape took me bout a day or so to figure out how to do that. However the addition of animated characters i found to be my downfall.. I can place Kork in the mission, but he is weapon less and simply stands there like a statue. LOL.. Again im a newb at this, all i know has come from messing with the game itself and searching some parts of the forums. From what i read i will have to script in the animation details for Kork, so all i can do really is design the mission landscapes. Which is fun really, but lonly without npcs walking about lol.. Ill keep fiddling with it till i figure it out and read the forums. Btw i just have the TGE i dont have any other items/tools with it yet, I will be investing in each tool or package i feel i need as i go along. Content packs seem awesome. Ive tried to learn C++ from online tutorials and using MS Visual basic to write programs.. I couldnt get the hang of it. I gave up after a month of trying.. However im forcing myself to learn now. Hope it helps since im making it a Hobby / investment. I am hoping it doesnt take me aslong to learn it as it has to learn html lol.. Took bout a yr to learn that, and not fully.

Im also not understanding how to get the game to play. Yes i can go to fps starter kit, click on start new mission, go in build a world, put up non animated korks, buildings trees, rocks landscape and the sort, but not sure yet how to get in name it and play it. I also wanna make it multiplayer for 10 of my friends, we have all been playing Games Since Ultima Online. We still play Ultima Online. So i have alot of work ahead of me, im thinking 3 yrs lol.. Looking at it as a hobby. Who knows maybe some day it may become something bigger. Anyway, ty for your reply and sorry this message is so long. Anymore suggestions answers, questinos are welcome.

I think you're fine. My advice is do what you know, and run that out as far as you can, and then learn the next thing. Just don't stop futzing with it, ever. Over time, you'll get to where you can be productive.

I've spent two years on my game so far, but if I had to do it over again I could do it all in six months, easy. Most of that time was learning, making mistakes, and spending time on relatively unessential things. No replacement for it, however.

The forums are great, though. You can find the answers to most questions in there without even asking.

There is always Torque School www.torqueschool.com. They are really good from what I have taken. Extremely well written and lots of visual aids. I would suggest checking them out. The classes can be a little pricey but then again it includes all the material you are going to need including books, they write their own.

Another program you can learn from is an apprenticeship with IndieZen. If you are interested in more details for that email me at veleck @ gmail.com

Also one of the best things is to start changing things in the basic mission. Breaking it is always fun. I have done that more than once. You can also offer your services as a novice programmer/scripter or anything else you're looking to do and I am sure a team will pick you up and help you along.

I am also in your boat. I have been working with Torque for a year now and still don't feel like I have even broken the surface. It definitely a challenge but I have seen quite a few successful projects. So I get some good warm feelings from it and press on.

If you have any questions let me know by emailing me at veleck @gmail.com
