Rendering 3D objects as 2D.

I was curious if anyone knew of a method to render a 3D object as a 2D object. I'm looking for a way to make a character model appear only in a two dimensional plane. Sort of like taking depth perception out of a model.
An example: You and another player look at each other. You see what would be rendered as the front of the person in a flat two dimensional plane looking back at you. You proceed to strafe around the character, continuing to look at at him/her. The viewed player continues to render in a two dimensional plane, but as you move the render changes so you see the 3D model from different angles.
If that was a bit vague, I can try to restate what I'm looking for. If anyone knows how to do this, or even where to start, it would be very appreciated.

You can use Bryce or 3DsMax to render the background at different angles then you can insert the 2d image at each frame image separately. for example lets say you want 360 panoramic view , render the 3d surrounding at 10 degrees apart (36 images) then add the 2d image of your character at every image.
