Problem with 3D game programming all in one

by Chris Young · in Site Feedback · 01/21/2008 (10:48 pm) · 7 replies

Bought a book called "3D game programming all in one" that came with a CD that had a game engine and some demo software, and stuff. However when I put it in the CD nothing happened (because my drivers were broken), but that was never a problem until now because I could always just go into the CD manually and install programs from it.

However, with this one, there does not seem to be an installer program, so I can't do anything. I downloaded autoFix from Microsoft and that fixed the drivers, so now what happens when I try the CD is that it scans EVERYTHING on the CD and then asks me if I wanna play music or download pictures... Nothing about actually getting the files installed to my computer so that I can use it.

How do I fix this problem?

I'm using Windows XP service pack 2. The computer originally had Vista.

Browse the CD, there should be a "Start.exe" and a "setup.exe". Run the Start.exe. The book explains what the setup.exe is for (installing Torque)

I don't see a setup.exe or start.exe in the CD.

There's a start.swf and a start page that goes to the shockwave file and just has me open the CD from there after agreeing to the EULA.

Hmm...I'm not sure what to tell you next, then. Maybe someone will be along shortly to enlighten the both of us, sorry.

Well I found the Torque Demo, but it just installed that.

Is that all I need? And I just need to install everything else seperately?

I'll look in the book shortly. it had some instructions for using the extras folder.

Chris, the demo is all you need for now. I believe all the other programs on there are demos as well and if you're having a problem installing them from the disc, most can be downloaded online.
If I remember correctly, the disc also contained resources for the book, like .cs files and such, which was viewed via the start.swf. I might be wrong about the resources though, I own all four Torque books and I might be getting them confused. You should still be able to get to them though without going through the start.swf.

Thanks.

What happens if you change the program that opens the .cs? I'd still be okay right because I can change it later? Although I have a feeling they might be opened from the command line with the compiler?

If you change the program that opens the .cs file, then another program will open it automatically when clicked. It doesn't mean that the engine won't open it if you exec it.
