Service Unavailable - Fail to connect

by George Larson · in Site Feedback · 01/20/2008 (9:26 am) · 210 replies

For the past 48 hours I have sporadically received the following error when attempting to access the forums

Service Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.

Reference #6.847ffea5.1200847817.1199fd0

the reference number keeps changing.

Is there an issue with the website?

This definately isn't good. I've had this "Service Unavailable" problem now for a couple days. Glad to see I'm not alone but not happy that it's happening period. I'll just get the forums scrapbooked so I can read them on my night shifts.

I'm also experiencing this - it comes and goes, and is making it really difficult to pursue the forums, and forced me to wait a day to download a reinstall of Torque X from you. Thanks for anything you guys can prod Akamai into fixing this!

Has anyone been able to figure out how to access TDN? I can browse the garagegames.com website fine using 216.116.32.49, but I still can't get to TDN.

On winXP you can edit the hosts file in notepad in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

add this line at the bottom
216.116.32.49 www.garagegames.com

save and restart your browser.

I'm not sure what the file is called or where it is located on non-Windows OS's but I'm sure there's something similar

Thanks Jon, that worked perfectly.

Jon, you are a life saver! This website problem has been driving me nuts over the past week!!

I'm new around here and this was a horrid way to start my joining this community!

Editing the host file worked like a champ! I'm still confused as to how GG could not fix this, particularly taking into account that via this forum the problem has been going on since January.

Oh well, I'm just glad that I can now access this place for the first real time since I first bought TorqueX 2.0 Pro last week!

A major "Yay!" for Jon!

Honestly guys, we've been trying to get Akamai to fix this problem since December--they are very unwilling to even research the problem, and are requiring very detailed information when it occurs that we can't feasibly ask end users to provide (some of the ways to get the information is over my head) before they will take any troubleshooting steps. This means that until one of us get the problem again (it hits us as well, just very intermittently), Akamai won't move forward on fixing the issue.

The very nature of the issue (being so intermittent) makes it very difficult to track down, but we are continuing to do everything we can think of to find the problem and get it fixed.

When I run traceroute I get tdn.garagegames.com ending at ip 69.64.36.246 air495.startdedicated.com .

I also can't access tdn.garagegames and had problems on the product pages. I am on the east coast, if that helps pin point the problem

I am also gettign the "Service Unavailable" message when I try to access TDN.GarageGames.com. Everything else seems to work fine except TDN. I am on the west coast.

Most of us have to use the direct ip to come to this site. The only way I found out that the website was not actually down was using google and clicking on the cache link. I am sure a lot of people can't access this website like me and may have just given up on you guys.

To be honest it may be time to just threaten to leave Akamai(with a very close date termination of service). Maybe then they will realize its time to do something. If they give you another excuse like they need more information just click that cancel button right then and there.

Maybe this non 100% uptime would be somewhere in their Terms of Service and you can nail them on that. They shouldn't need detailed information to realize it just does not work.

Hmm, do you think garagegames needs more bandwidth?

In my case, this began to happend slowly, and for a while (maybe three weeks) I lost all capacity to access the site, without using the "ip patch procedure". Then one day, it just stop happening, and now I got the problem just one or two times a week, for a while.

BUT Guys, you should seriously consider the reading of the whole thread, because -at least- the last 15 posts were about things already posted. The result its nothing more than spamming the thread.

On the other side, what IS actually useful, is to know who else is suffering this problem, and how regularily.

With the only purpose of summarize and somehow stops this wave of RE-discovery of procedures that were mentioned a dozen times on this very thread, I've wrote this,

=========================================

Things we know about this problem:

* Is intermittent, beeing almost permanent to some people and infrequent to others.
* Is not in the whole site, as apparently only the part hosted by Akamai is beeing affected. The parts of the site known to fail under the circunstances are: the whole Community section and sub-sections (forums, resources, blogs, etc) and TDN.
* The problen can be patched by using the IP 216.116.32.49 to access the site (by directly use it on the browser like http://216.116.32.49/ , or by replacing it on the windows hosts file [see in this thread the post "Jon Fernback - Apr 04, 2008 19:19 GMT" for more info])
* Adding "origin-" to the address also works for patching (like http://origin-www.garagegames.com/).
* None of the patch procedures solve the inability to access TDN. *Update: Some users reported the change on the windows host file as currently working on TDN.

=========================================

So! people: please stop repeating this again and again, lets be useful on this, instead of messy. I strongly suggest to read the whole thread before post, and ONLY post IF:

* You have REALLY something to add to the discussion.
* You didnt "signed" yet as one of the "victims", case in which I recommend to write just a line.
* Complains should be droped in just once every ten posts or so. XD

I have the same problem, I suddenly can't access the TDN (and ironically I am also on the west coast, WA). It was working fine yesterday... Today was the first time I have encountered the problem (it only seems to happen with the TDN) and it has persisted all day.

Two separate problems folks.

TDN has been down today, and it being Sunday, no one is available to fix the server it's on. Should be up by tomorrow.

It's happening to me on both FF and IE 7.

I have to copy the link I want to visit then close my browser session then reload my browser and paste the address to go to the page I want, it's very frustrating. It happens on the forums to.

I just received an email from David Blake at GG with a list of the stuff Akamai is asking for to troubleshoot this problem. (The site is current working for me, so I answered them all, but I think it's best to do this when you actually experiencing the problem right then.)

0) Time and time zone it happened (convert to GMT for Akamai)
1) The Akamai error displayed on the screen (ex: Reference #6.7c7ffea5.1201635804.f491032)
2) Client IP address - use http://checkip.dyndns.org
3) the url that failed (ie http://www.garagegames.com/main/login) (or is it only on POST?
4) traceroute to www.garagegames.com
5) traceroute to a1.g.akamai.net
6) Their OS
7) Their Browser and version
8) if they try to login via origin-www.garagegames.com does it work?

Hope that helps guys!

I was originally going to post that here but we were trying to isolate cases for Akamai that were particularly constant (in hopes that they could find and negate some big bad somewhere). But it seems that this topic has steadily become a number of those isolate cases. Send me the information as you encounter it and I'll get it to the right people.

I got back into Torque a week ago

thought I might spice things up a little bit and actually enjoy using this tech since tge 1.5 is there

but i can't access anything: tdn, forums, any useful resources using your DOMAIN which is really garagegames' selling point since it really is a online community based and online store and whatnot

for a company like garagegames, if the domain is down either it is just temporary or it happens in certain areas, it is very certain that they would lose a heck of customer base because why? garagegames.com is the only way they could access and enjoy their benefits as customers.

Garagegames, I read the previous posts in this thread and I know it is not your fault and you're working hard to resolve this issue. However, please know that the customers are not going to blame Akamai or any other hosting/service providers because you guys are down. They are going to turn to you guys.

Keep it up resolving this issue with Akamai; I hope Akamai realizes this is a huge issue and tries something now.

Is anyone willing to start a forum for Torque developers, users ?
