I know this is probably a bit goofy to ask, but coming from working with MAX, are the shapes and interiors that are created in Torque unable to be mapped? Does this mean that the shapes are typically just used for placeholders for objects created in programs like MAX?

Short answer: Yes, you are unable to get shapes and interiors mapped in Torque..
The way it works (out of the box atleast.) is you make your interiors inside another program like Constructor, Quark, Hammer and other Brush-based editors.
Shapes (everything else that's not interior) can be made in Max..You do not build any shapes/interiors with Torque, but rather you place everything with torque inside your mission.
Basicly, you build a few houses, fences, chickens and what not with other programs and import it to your mission inside Torque.
.. Well, there is ways to build interiors with max though. do a search for max2Ctor for more information..

For example, a room's walls, floor, ceiling, and doorway would be an "interior" created in a brush-based editor in the much same way levels were created in Half-Life, Quake, and Unreal Tournament. The detailed objects that fill the room would be things like chairs and tables and ornate clocks. Those would be created in Max or Maya or Lightwave.
