I can make games

by IGotBigBunz · in Jobs · 12/26/2007 (7:15 pm) · 13 replies

I was looking to get involved in a brand new project, but I wasnt sure what to do. However, in this day and age you have to find the right people to work with becuase the standard is so high that the game/mod has to reach.

So anyone out there with awsome skillz wanta talk about what might be worth doing?

Please those people with a million ideas and limited skillz (or time) please dont reply.

How can one know that you're not also a person with "a million ideas and limited skillz"?

Err.. Just some constructive criticism. Those with "awsome skillz" who "wanta talk" will probably not contact you just based on your grammar. If you are trying to gather a team, as opposed to joining one, you should start a post stating an idea you have, and what "skillz" you bring to the table. Are you a programmer, scripter, 2d artist, 3d modeler, skinner, texture artist, game tester etc. What applications are your proficient in?

Also, what engine do you plan on using? Do you own any engine licenses or do you plan on modding a Torque demo or similar engine? Some details (and grammar) can really help get you people with "awsome skillz". Otherwise, you'll just get "those people with a million ideas and limited skillz". My 2 cents

Thanks for the grammer advice Barry. I dont have any plans to use any engines. I don't really have any ideas for games. The lack of ideas limits me from being part of the "a million ideas and limited skillz" crew. I am a C++ programmer but can use other launguages and scripts well. I have programmed mods/games in multiple engines. I was lead programmer for DeathBall in UT, Cow&Chicken CTF in Quake, and Code Name Eagle in BF and BF2. I can photshop dds files with alphas and know why one might do that. I also have and can model in Maya and 3dsmax, although I really like Maya much more. I have written plugins for these modelling programs for import export of various formats. I can use a map maker and have used Radient and Source and UT map makers. I dont really animate much but could if I could ever figure out rigging.. I am pretty strong in file formats and can write a tool to do something if I had to.

Yup, it's Berry. Anyways, sounds like you want to join a team and not create one. Check out the team building threads. Also, if you're good at C++, you could do a contract job, get your name out there and hopefully be in the credits of a finished game. That'll earn you some street cred and either get you into a promising team, or allow for a start of a resume of sorts to get a nice team going. Of course, doing your own clones of games works decent for a resume as well. Try making your own complete mario clone or 3d fps, they key is that it is a complete game. Once you get some screenshots going showing you're dedicated, people will be much more eager to join.

You sound like you're more about the technical side of things instead of the creative. That's a refreshing change of pace. Surely, you'll be able to find a good project.

I think you may be talking about the Interceptor project. I am not sure I would be interested in that.

However funny thing is that I once did a mod for UT2004 that included a complete and flyable mission to Mars. I actually modelled a complete Cape Canaveral then I made rockets and landers and had them in game and flyable. It was designed to be a multiplayer game where it took a team of people to go to Mars. I have most of the original mod files but couldnt find the renders I did of the lander actually entering the martian atmosphere.

Anyway, at the time I thought the project was fantastic (I still do). However, there was a consistant lack of interest from around the web in such a project, and such a project had to have at least 4 dedicated modders a couple years to make it work. So in the end it was un finnished. If I remeber right the highlight of the completed work was the lander which was awsome.

I never really did get over the fact that despite an awsome web site and a year of work there was zero interest in that mod. I learned a lesson from all that. Pay attention to what people actually want, not what you think they want.

Another lesson I learned from the CodeName Eagle projects is, people expect you art work to be state of the art. Quality needs to be beyond the current standard, and that is high.

User I could email you my design doc so you could take a look at it and see if you would be interested.

Also thats cool you worked in UT2k4 modding I also worked in the UT2004 modding community for a time. I ran the USkaarj2k4 RTS mod that worked on converting UT2k4 into a RTS engine.
