You start with a small village in Scandinavia, of which you are the leader. You sail your ships all over Europe plundering, and bring riches back to your homeland. With the gold, you expand your humble village into a mighty city. When your city grows powerful enough, you may wish to conquer the other tribes and start a kingdom.
The game could also have a few mythological elements, such as having trolls to fight and building shrines to the gods to get bonuses.
It will be either an RTS or a TBS.
I still haven't thought of a story, but I will eventually.
Please share any ideas or comments.

This should be an RTS, kind of like a city simulator. Then, when you get to the raiding, stop the city simulator and go into the raiding game. Although to be realistic, I think the control of your raiding vessels should be limited once they leave on their journey. It sounds fantastic. Really.

Now that I've slept on it a bit, maybe a hybrid RBS/RTS like Total War would work. It reminds me a little bit of a game that I wanted to make long ago, but it was actually a migratory society and not vikings. Something a bit educational even.

After reading all of your posts, I'm thinking it will be a city building game. Then, to get gold, you can send out raiding parties, which you can't control once they are sent. Or, you (the king) could personally lead the raid, but then your city could be attacked while you are away.
Hopefully, I'll actually start on this game, unlike my other ideas.

One has to appreciate the honesty of that statement.
You could get quite far with just a world map and a crude city simulator.

I personally would like a game where you could multiplayer this and do things like that, where your objective is to either become the ruler and rule the land by commanding it's resorces as well as just destroying everybody else, sort of like age of empires/ civillization combo, but with alot of different aspects to it, like sending in spys to learn exactly what you enemy is doing, sabatoge units and things like that. the only diffence is the fact that it would be in modern era.
This probably won't have anything to do with your current project.
Oh, ummmm, if you want, I could help with design and some programming.

Hey! I was thinking on a idea similar to that. I heard about a game one time from a freind was that it was sort of like a RTS, except that you could do things to enemy cities like cut off communictions, water, power, and transportation, all by destroying the right buildings, and If you send in the right team of people, like a black ops unit or a sabatoge unit and you level out the building and the team escapes before they notice them. That game demo might have some ideas for you, I haven't played the demo. It just sounded a bit similar, this weekend, I plan to download it and since I'm really into history it's right up my alley.

Not hating this idea by any means (Vikings rock!), but I just want to make the point that it sounds like a very limited version of Civ. My suggestion (if you ever decide to work on it) is to really make it a history lesson for the player (incorporate the Anglo Saxons with Beowulf as their Hero unit or something lol) like Jason Ravencroft mentioned earlier. It could turn out really cool if you can make that culture grab the user.

I'm working on another project now, but I plan to start this in the summer. And it would be fun to incorporate all the myths and legends of the people into the game.

Well theres a game called alleigence online which is a sci-fi game where you pick a race and a team of players and the team leader has a mode where he can build building get supplys from mining astroids ect ect but you also (mainly) fly a ship and have to destroy the enemys ships and take over differnt galaxys and that would be a cool idea for yours, you have 2 modes city builder then fps or fighter
