I have my thoughts, but I'll let others chime in first...

There is no comparison between Mario and Pokemon - just because they both relate to Nintendo it does not mean they will follow the same path of success.

Mario seeped into the cultural subconcious over the course of a decade - this is why its position is so strong - this elevates it above the position of a FAD.

And Im sorry - but GoldenEye is one of the only N64 games the mainstream heard of - they know of Mario because he is a well established character - not because of any one Mario game - and they know Pokemon because of the merchandise - TV series and Films (and because of thier kids)most people probably dont even know Pokemon is a game first - and everything else later - as for figures - erm - I dont see anyone else posting any evidence of thier statements.

Anyway - I have already stated my dislike of Nintendo - and my hope that they dont win the console war - and admitted to having a bias - I just think others should be able to do the same.Lets just stop now before this turns from a question about E3 - to a debate about the Xbox - to an arguement about Nintendo.

What I learned from E3, By Paul "Ausculta"

The industry is flooded with FPS games (first person shooters) and only getting more so, so any GG developer that wants to put one out will have to do something really revolutionary or with a plot so deep that even after a player has beaten the game they're still left not knowing exactly what happened and have to play the game agian to figure it all out for it to be truly successful.

Modern RPGs seem to be selling these days based entirely on flashy graphics and the name of the company that developed them alone. All of them still to this day follow the "slay the giant wumpus" plot to some extent. MMORPGs? There's just more giant wumpuses to slay and actual people to help you do it (although some MMOGs still in dev look very promising, in that they might offer a real change of pace). Again, we indies need to show shmoe-gamer-at-large something truly new to grab their attention.

For all other current genres, see the above. There's a few acceptions, but not enough to make a real difference.

A set of standards has been created for the industry as a whole. If we don't really shatter the box it's unlikely that the establishment will.

Personally I'm planning on shattering the box, jumping up and down on the pieces, setting them on fire and then throwing them in front of an on-coming car. Putting a truly new spin on a couple genres and maybe create an entirely new one. Will gamers like it? Maybe, maybe not. I think they will, I think they're starving for something truly new (I know I am, but I'm insane). Regardless it will put a new perspective on how things can be done.

I'm not saying the industry is broken or that the old standards can't still make a buck, I'm just sick of it, the sameness of the majority of it all.

Ugh.... methinks I have been soap boxing again. Please be accepting my apologies.

I wonder if Xbox games will take advantage of its GeForce3 card, or if it ends up where they could have just a GF2. Hhmmm..

All I know is that of all the titles and demos that I saw at the GDC, the XBox was more impressive than the PS2.

Eric like the first 6 months, the games will probably be Geforce 2 quality. But by 11.8.2003 (one year after launch) titles will look even better because they will be running on a Geforce 3. As time goes on, the graphics won't look dated for a while because of the amazing video card.

-box uses an implementation of DX8 as far as I know, and DX8 is ready to use all GF3 features, so I would suppose that X-box games would use the GF3's features quite early on.
