TGEA demo : DX9 didn't cut it...

by Ronnie · in Technical Issues · 10/31/2007 (9:47 am) · 28 replies

Hello everyone,

Some members here have suggested that
I would download both TGE and TGEA demos,
just to see what they look like etc, so I did.

However, while both TGE v1.4.2 and TGE v1.5.2
have worked great, it was TGEA v1.0.3 demo
that did the following:

--------------------------------------------------
0. Prerequisites
--------------------------------------------------

..................................................
(a) TGE v1.4.2 and TGE v1.5.2
..................................................

They seemed to have been worked
just fine, specifically the demo games.

..................................................
(b) TGEA System requirements
..................................................

I looked at the documentation,
and it specifically stated that
DirectX v8.0 was the minimum.

--------------------------------------------------
1. First TGEA demo-run attempt
--------------------------------------------------
I tried to run it, but it would display some error
message having to do with "DX", so I assumed
it was a DirectX-related problem.

My solution:

Since whatever DirectX version I'd already had,
if at all, was not sufficient, I installed DirectX v9.0
from its 35MB run-time distribution installer.

--------------------------------------------------
2. Second TGEA demo-run attempt
--------------------------------------------------
I tried again, but it would display some error
message that said something else regarding DX.

My solution:

I wasn't sure whether DirectX v9.0 runtime
alone was enough, so next I installed the DSK
of DirectX v9.0 from a 239MB-distribution installer.

--------------------------------------------------
3. Third TGEA demo-run attempt
--------------------------------------------------
I tried a third time, but it would display some error
message that said : "Cannot load all functions. Try
to re-install".

My solution: none.

At that point I didn't know what to do.

So my question is:

Would I need to install DirectX v10.0 for
TGEA demo -- let alone the actual app -- to work?

Or, would it be due to some other problem(s),
as TGE worked ok?

Thanks in advance
Ronnie

Okay, thanks for explaining that. But I went to DXDIAG and I saw Direct3d Enabled. I also did the famous DirectX spinning box test to make sure D3D is working. Everything is enabled and working fine, but TGEA just doesn't want to start up.

Note: I am using the TGEA demo, not the full version.

The demo should be the full version without the source code. The source license is what you pay for.

1. Card Specs
===============
Care to specify what kind of card you got?
Mine is "NVIDIA GeoForce FX 5200", and
while BOTH demos of TGE v1.4.2 and v1.5.2
seem to wok fine, the demo TGEA v1.0.3 of
keeps displaying all sorts of DX-related error
messages and does NOT work.

My graphics card, by the way, was purchase
along with the computer, which is rather new.

==============================
2. DX Run-Time Update : Oct./2007
==============================
One link provided above is for a web-based runtime, that
may take up to 212 MB ??? Does any one know whether
it could be downloaded as a standalone installer?

==============================
3. DX Full SDK Update : Aug./2007
==============================
Another link provided above is for the full SDK, which is
well over double the size, namely, more than 450 MB...
Does any one know whether, if I were to install it,
my graphics card would suffice to run TGEA demo?

Thanks for any ideas,
Ronnie

TGE uses OpenGL and does not have pixel shader requirements. And just because the computer is new doesn't mean that the graphics card is new. I think the problem may be with your video card.

The 5200 is an entry-level NVidia card that has been the cause of much controversy (I believe it was the 5200 series that Valve lambasted for its DX performance).

I found a benchmarking article that might interest you on the 5200.

Well,

What would be the next-level card,
both for price and minimum requirements,
that could run TGEA demo (let alone the
real app) w/o any problems?

I would go for something in the 7 series. At least a 7300, they're rather cheap now.

My graphics is is a: mobile intel 945GM express chipset family.

Voila !!!

Problem solved.

Apparently, I thought that my OLD version of DirectX v9.0c
from 2004 or so would solve the problem, but it was actually
the 2007 edition of the 64MB run-time installer only that was it.

So yes, I've finally succeeded in getting TGEA v1.0.3 (Demo)
to work -- it looked pretty good indeed.

No upgrades for my graphics card or drivers were necessary.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Ronnie
