Torque with ATI RADEON 7200!
by Chad \"DigitalEagle\" Kullhem · in General Discussion · 08/22/2002 (2:20 pm) · 37 replies
I have had problems with my ATI radeon 7200 card ever sense I updated it's drivers. But only with Torque and Tribes2. I needed to update my graphics drivers because they old ones kept crashing some of my other games, so I won't down-grade my drivers.
I fixed this problem in T2 by turing on indoor textured fog. But this causes lag with fps of 5 when I go near buildings.
Here are some snapshots of the problems I have. The jpg quality is low, but you can still see the problem clearly.

Please help, thanks.

I experimented with a few drivers, mainly ATI's new Catalyst 3.1 driver set. The drivers seem to fix the problem, however it doesn't support my resolution. So, of course it isn't a torque engine problem. It's a mere driver problem. If anyone knows of a good driver for my card (ATI M7), then please let me know. Thanks!-Bugiz

Hopefully it's with the drivers on the problem I'm having now though instead of the way Torque works.

After your post Bugiz, I saw the 3.1 driver on ATI's website but it's not on their main page. I'll have to give it a try in the morning on a problem I've been having with my card (ATI 9700 Pro). My problem is only occuring on the MainGUI (main menu). Turning my AA off completely fixes the problem somewhat but I can't get the best out of my card while testing my game. Even with the AA turned off, I still get frequent glitches on the menu screen with all the graphics (background, buttons, cursor) being very pixelated and flashing. I'll take a screenshot of that problem when I get home. Here's Tim's answer to the problem with the AA being turned on.Quote:It is a problem with the anti-aliasing. When AA is mode is turned on the Radeon pro card clears the back buffer, which the Torque GUI is assuming is not cleared. Turning AA off will fix it for now. We'll have to change the GUI to fully refresh the screen on certain cards.
Hopefully it's with the drivers on the problem I'm having now though instead of the way Torque works.

If we continue to have problems with the ATI cards on graphics issues, we should email them again and say it's not a program problem because using a geforce based card always works ;].

Well one of our artists is having similar problems with his ATI Radeon 9700 pro and also is FireGL 8800. He try all the demo built using the Torque Engine (Marble Blast, Orbz, Realm Wars, Tribes2, etc...) and they often have trouble with texture and some other thing.
The way he found to get rid of the problem was to go in the Windows preference and put graphics performance of the card lower (put the bar around the middle). And then all the trouble stop, so i am not too sure exactly which feature of the Radeon make all this trouble.
He will do more testing this week, as soon as i get other info i will let you know.

ATI does not support them directly! It clearly states on their website that they do not support the Mobility chips with driver downloads directly you MUST contact the vendor of your laptop for the correct drivers. I have a Sony VAIO GRX570 and it doesn't seem to have any problems with Torque, RealmWars, Orbs Demo or Tribes2. It has a 7500 Mobility w 64MB.
There do seem to be issues related to sound card drivers not playing nice with the ATI drivers and cheap no-name motherboards with crappy chipsets not playing nice either.

You can't base anything on Mobilty based chipsets for one simple reason.ATI does not support them directly! Asus K7V w/latest 4-n-1 drivers
I just tested the Catalyst 3.1 drivers and they appear to work fine. I only tried them for a few minutes, though, so it's not a thourough test. I also didn't mess with the fog settings (I left textured fog on).

Catalyst 3.1 seems to work here as well. Much faster, too.

BTW. Has anybody noticed any graphics problems in America's Army Operations? They almost seem the same as the torque problem. AAO was made on the UT engine, but I have no problems with UT... ow well. My main concern is T2/torque and Radeon =)
-Thanks

I'm glad to see that nobody forgot this problem. I've un-installed Tribes 2 all together due to the fact that I could no longer play with my card. But if you say the new 3.1 drivers fix the problems, then I'm back to T2 and I'll buy Torque.BTW. Has anybody noticed any graphics problems in America's Army Operations? I hate to give the card up, but my only other team member has a 9700 TX so I'll probably put it in his system. I haven't looked up the differences in those cards, besides the price. He'll be doing most of the models though so he shouldn't have the problems I've had with using it in my project.

I'm possibly thinking of getting one of the new GeForce FX cards when they come out next week (Feb. 16 I think). I've never had problems with any of the NVidia cards which I still have one in my older system. All I've seen is problems from my 9700 Pro, which came with my new system.I hate to give the card up, but my only other team member has a 9700 TX so I'll probably put it in his system. The new NV drivers and the new ATI drivers both seem to have improved overall stability and feature-full-ness across the chipset lines.

BTW, the NV cards have just as many problems as the ATI cards... ;)The new NV drivers and the new ATI drivers both seem to have improved overall stability and feature-full-ness across the chipset lines.

I managed to obtain a "hacked" version of the C3.1 desktop driver, manipulated to run on my notebook. Finally the problem is solved! Now I can proceed with purchasing the Torque engine! WOO HOO!-Jeff

On my Radion, using GLDirect (www.scitechsoft.com) corrected the issues. I've since retired the Radion from service.

I also had problems with my 7200.. I changed my driver to 2-year old drivers. Everything works fine now. It's pretty sad.. ATI makes excellent graphics cards.. but their drivers are garbage.

I don't have any issues playin tribes.
Not sure how to help you because what ever is bugging you happens to be the older ati and some settings/hardware.
Just so you know that the 9000 series don't have any problems and OpenGL in 3dsmax looks nice.
The Direct X looks perfect too. :)
hope ya get it fixed..

I don't know how the MAX exporter handles this. Also, GeForce cards do not have any problem with 256 color textures whatsoever...
03/26/2003 (7:01 am)
NOTE: If you have an ATI Radeon card and your game crashes at mission load, check your shape textures! We're using Milkshape, and switching from 256-color BMP to RGB Truecolor .PNG for the textures got rid of our crash. The crash happened on texture loading, and the textureName pointed to a shape which originally had 256-color BMP textures.I don't know how the MAX exporter handles this. Also, GeForce cards do not have any problem with 256 color textures whatsoever...
