Help with 3d software

I currently have TGE 1.5 once i have learned enough there upgrade to TGEA. But overall on a budget i can get Lightwave for under 200$ to practice with other than on Newteks site is there any other tutorials. I am looking into making a RTS first. So any help appreciated. I would like to eventually get Maya or 3ds Max but for the money lightwave is preferred. The main reason I am asking is I see loads of 3ds and Maya info but not a-lot of Lighwave.

Lightwave at that price is through journeysed.com but the trick is you have to be a student to get it at that price. I plan on getting it for the 200$ then once i am ready to upgrade the license so I can have time to play with it. I will be combining LIghtwave with Dosch design packs and modifying those to get practice in using the program. And yes if i could afford 3d i would get it but the price tag for a beginner is horrendous

I'm not much of a 3d modeler (yet), but from what I've learned so far, while Lightwave is used for movies, Lightwave isn't used much for games. Most game companies use 3ds Max and most of the tutorials you will find that are game related are for 3ds Max. Not to mention that most of the models you will find are for 3ds Max as well (including the ones from GG). So, if you are interested in modeling for gaming, I would say 3ds Max is way to go.
