Exporting mutiple objects with lattice?

I have a small problem.

I have a character model I've made, and I need her eyes to be movable using a bone. The problem is both eyes are separate objects, on top of this I'm also using a lattice to conform the eyes to the face.

I have a picture here.

The cool thing about the lattice is I can move the bone target around and they eyes follow as if there were spheres. However, at first blush, it seems I have to export my model as a complete mesh, and the eyes have to be joined to the body.

The problem is when I join the eyes to the body, they "inflate" into spheres and bulge outside her head. Also they don't move anymore.

I have the parenting goes something like this. Eyebone -> eyes -> lattice -> headbone.

Does anyone have a good solution for this? I need the eyes flat, but they also need to be articulated properly.

The problem is that the eye isn't uniformly flat nor is it spherical. I like the texture idea. Is there a way I can do this is showtool to something? I don't mean to be a pain, bit it's rather hypercritical that her eyes are able to move. She also has to talk, but that's easy because I can move the vertexes in her mouth and tongue.
