Is it true?

I heard you can get sued for using weapons like AK-47 because it's copyrighted or some other license. I forget the exact source of this information (maybe wikipedia). I'm really concerned though, because that throws out all the work I did making weapons and then I have to modify them or make new ones. Anyone know the whole deal on that?

Just use the same layout, modify it a bit here and there and then use your own name for the weapon. Many AAA titles do that as well.

But you can always do like Counter-Strike does for example and just call it an 'ES' Five Seven. btw, the capitalization of the original name is important too, the F and the N make FN which i believe stands for Fabrique Nationale which is the company that makes it. FNH is the full, proper abbreviation, but i guess they decided to settle :P
Also, i've never heard of anyone getting sued over something like that.... though that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Just do like Andrew said and avoid manufacturer names and you should be fine.

Since the USSR no longer exists, and they were the only ones who could be concieved of as owning the rights to all Kalashnikov weapons. I don't see who would sue you for that. But yes, you ARE at potential target if you use....say, an FNH Five-seveN.But you can always do like Counter-Strike does for example and just call it an 'ES' Five Seven. btw, the capitalization of the original name is important too, the F and the N make FN which i believe stands for Fabrique Nationale which is the company that makes it. What about this lot all disinctive looks, would you make up names or what? Even with fake names would you be in trouble for the looks as some are very reconisabler.Marshal Arms Pistol Click Here

You could also try to be original and create weappons of your own.

I think the worst you would encounter would be a Cease and Desist Letter from the manufacturer(s) telling you to stop using the likeness of their product. If you dont encounter that then I wouldnt worry about it.You could also try to be original and create weappons of your own.

I have designed myself dozens in 2D while I was a student (which explain some lack of knowledge here and here) ;)
Don't be afraid, be original! that's the power of being an indie developper.

Well, that would explain why the guns in HL CS Source were always mirror images of the real things. (Or so my source tells me.)
