Mirroring In Blender

Ok, attempting to use Blender, and I am getting better, Im just having a serious problem using the Mirror Modifier. Im following the Low Poly Modelling at MontageStudio.org, and I love it, but my mirror isnt working like it does in the tutorial. I select two sides to extrude out, and when I extrude them out, they also extrude inward, like they are being duplicated or something. My modifier settings are set as:
Merge Limit: 0.0010
X is the mirror axis out of XYZ, do clipping is selected.
the Enable during Render, Interactive Display and EditMode are selected (the three buttons beside the word Mirror) and so is the apply modifier to editing cage during editmode selected.
If anyone needs more info I can give it, this is the only problem Ive had so far so it cant be that complicated can it? Thanks to anyone who replies.

Be sure to delete one side of your mesh before adding the mirror modifier :)

Ben Immel, I wasn't sure what you were referring to in your email but I'm pretty sure your problem is that before you added the mirror modifier you already had a mesh on both sides. Thus when you added the modifier you would get the exact behavior you're seeing because you really do have two meshs on top of each other, each being mirrored by the other side.Be sure to delete one side of your mesh before adding the mirror modifier :)
