Open Max4 .max files with max 3.1?

Can this be done? I need to open it in max so I can use the biped or can it be saved as .3ds and still use the biped?

No you cannot open Max R4 files in Max R3, there is also no way to save a Max file to be compatible with a previous version. Like most software on the market it is backwards compatible only, versions of the software do not know how to read a future version.

Although the biped nodes are exported to a 3DS format, their relation and transform information is not (ie. all of the shapes will center itself on the origin). So to get a biped shape into Max R3 you will need a copy of Character Studio that runs in R3.

I will ask around if anyone knows of a 3rd party plugin that will support the biped shape so that you can move your data around, but don't be surprised if I can't find the result that you are seeking.

Thanks it was worth a shot. What almost worked was saveing the file as .3ds then open it in max 3.1 but the biped was all jacked up.
